High-speed rail plans announced by government.

Silly really, you can already get to Birmingham quicker than commute across a lot of London. Perhaps their unwillingness to commute should be taken into consideration before we build anything else? Or maybe, just maybe, they could employ some northerners?

A baby sardine saw his first submarine, he was scared so looked through the peephole. Oh come, come, come said the sardine's mum, it's only a tin full of people

It looks like HS2 phases 2a and 2b are to be delayed (government speak for cancelled).

That will leave us with just phase 1, the London to Birmingham section with the link onto the West Coast mainline at Handsacre (for services to Stafford and the north).

So, HS2 will not cut through the north east side of Stafford (for the foreseeable future), but Stafford will still get the 'benefit' of the high speed services.

Any chance of us getting a garden bridge over Lake Sandon now?

It remains to be seen just how quickly they still intend to deliver phase 1, but it is potentially good news for Stafford, as it now looks like the bypass line around Stafford (phase 2a) will not be going ahead. The consequence of that will be a major increase in high speed services through Stafford, potentially increasing the town's importance as a 'railway town'.

Unfortunately, those living along the route of phase 2a will probably not get any respite, as the government will not want to be seen to cancel that phase, so it will just be announced as a delay (an indefinite one).

The whole point of HS2 was that the existing network cannot handle increased capacity so there's not likely to be any significant increase in high speed services.

Add the fact that people's travelling routines have totally changed since COVID there's little incentive or demand for faster train services from Stafford.
