Ah Oxford, don’t you love it! Right first thing congratulations to Oxford for seriously attempting to provide local, easy to access services to your residents. Well done, but that has and should have absolutely nothing to do with trying to resolve your congestion issues. Oxford has a major congestion problem so needs a solution. They looked at a charging system as in London and an emissions system as in Birmingham, but both these systems adversely effect the poorest in their communities. So they needed a solution that solved the problem, but was fair to the people of Oxford. With this solution no-one is restricted from travelling anywhere in the City. The proposal simply means, on certain days and at certain times they must use the ring road to travel round Oxford before they pop back in to where they need to go rather than traveling through the city. Which, when you think about it, is one of the purposes of a ring road and talking to friends who live there is what they do anyway at peak times. Oh and they can ignore these restrictions 100 times a year with a free permit or if they work there, or if they have a blue badge, or if they are a delivery driver. It would be interesting to know before anyone knocks this solution what better solution they would propose to resolve the congestion in Oxford?

Just to save people from having to look up the quotes themselves, as we wouldn't want people to think we were being selective in order to spread misinformation...

People can drive freely around their own neighbourhood and can apply for a permit to drive through the filters, and into other neighbourhoods, for up to 100 days per year. This equates to an average of two days per week.

The alternative is to drive out on to the ring road and then back in to the destination.

Buses, coaches, taxis, delivery vans, HGVs, motorbikes and bikes are exempt and there are exceptions for blue badge holders and people with caring responsibilities.

Hi Gilbert,

I think we are at cross purposes. I am talking about 15min neighbourhoods whereas you, I believe, are talking about LTN’s (Low traffic Neighbourhoods) a completely different solution to a completely different problem. Please re-read my comment, I make no mention of closing any existing road infrastructure. Now if you want to talk about 15 min neighbourhoods or talk about LTN’s I’m happy to do so, but let’s make sure we are talking about the same thing.
I think our differing views on the subject differ with your belief that these zones are for our good and to help us, while I think they will increasingly control our behaviour and that just fits in with what has happened since the start of those bloody stupid lockdowns.
Next they'll be telling us where we shop, can eat and drink and centrally controlling our finances and telling us how much money we can have!
Oh, hold on...
As somebody who has increasingly leaned left over recent years. I have embraced freedom, travel, choice and culture. Being told you HAVE TO wear a mask, take a jab, can't go out, can only go certain places and now you see physical or theoretical barriers appearing does not fill me with thoughts of progress and freedom. Once we have 15 minute zones and CDBC controlling our finance, they'll ask us about our vehicle usage and this thread will be nothing but a lasting memory!

That incident was obviously further South but still contradicts their claims. The chap had travelled a long way, lost his call out fee plus price of the job and all the time with no recompense.
If they roll systems out, all need to know about them.

One specific one - The chap had travelled a long way, lost his call out fee plus price of the job and all the time with no recompense.
Got blocked from an area and was too far to walk with all his tools. Cost him £160 and lost a day.
Where was this? Was it a 15 minute city.

Hi Gilbert,

I really understand, and share, to a certain degree, your concerns. Whilst we may be miles apart in what we believe. I respect that fact that your views, are your true views and I respect that honesty. The fragility of our hard won freedoms is the one thing that I think we share a common understanding. I am currently neck deep in helping fight the Public Order Bill and we are slowly winning, GPS ankle tags, shutting down protests, some of the stop and search nonsense removed with just restricting internet access and the rest of stop and search to go 😊 My fear is that if we are suspicious of everything then we risk stopping the good things as well as the bad. Providing walkable access to essential services for everyone is, I feel, one of those good things. But if I’m wrong and I ever feel our freedoms are threatened I will be the first to be standing shoulder to shoulder with you on the barricade.

The first garden cities which were effectively the precursors of 15 minute cities were the likes of Welwyn Garden City, Letchworth, Port Sunlight & Bournville. The nearest modern equivalent is Milton Keynes which was designed to be a series of "villages" each with their own shops, recreational areas and green spaces with a large central shopping area accessible to all the local areas - by car.

Yes, between Stafford and Uttoxeter "There are timing changes to service 841 from 20th February 2023 to improve reliability. Saturday buses will no longer serve Kingstone, The Blythe, Salt or Hopton, and will run hourly between Stafford and Hixon with buses extended to Uttoxeter every two hours".
So residents of Kingstone, The Blythe, Salt or Hopton will have to use their local shop, except that they don't have one.

Welcome to the World of Gilbert Grape.....

Propositions are propounded, but documented evidence is n'er around.

If only everyone was so gracious, what?
Do you actually save a link to the proof of everything you ever watch or talk about?
Maybe try to be more understanding and have some trust?
