Today, I found that some evidential material had been deposited at the front door of the house.
I considered how I might deliver some admonishment about this, as I would generally view shrews are a largely beneficial resident, not given to entering houses and causing issues thereby.
Luckily, though, before I embarrassed myself with my lack of knowledge, I discovered that these are European Shrews and, as such, were not known to be present on this western island before 2005. They do, apparently, cause the native Pygmy Shrews some difficulties.
So, I have no recourse but to tick them off as an acceptable prey item.

Has anyone had experience of the cat laps that only open for your chipped cat. We got one for our cat because we needed to stop other cats coming into our utility room. It has stopped the stray cats but our cat is reluctant to use it. After pushing him through it a few times he's learnt how to go out of it but wont use it to come back in - prefers to top on the window, I'm hoping he gets used to it - any tips on how to make him use it to come in. Thks

Last week, I successfully killed off a load of moss from my garden, after which scarifying, I discovered had made up the majority of the greenery.
So, I applied a ton of grass seed and covered it with netting, with bricks to weigh it down to prevent the Starlings from having a free breakfast. And dinner. And tea.
On a previous seeding job on another garden, I had propped up the netting with some small sticks, only to find the next day about 20-30 Starlings standing on the netting and weighing it down low enough so that they could reach the seed.
I had learnt my lesson this time though, so I ended up using 2ft high bamboo sticks to keep the netting as far from the seed as possible.
Cue, this morning....
Looking out the window, I could see one of the local furry street patrol on stealth guard underneath my netting. I went outside to advise that their feline security wouldn't be necessary as the netting would be a sufficient deterrent from the Starlings.
However, I think they must have had had an urgent call to an incident in a nearby street. So pressing in fact, that they didn't have time to leave through the only small gap they managed to crawl in through, but instead bounced a dozen or so times against the netting until they had broken enough bamboo sticks and ripped enough of the netting apart to make good their escape.
I didn’t quite catch their collar number or else I’d have put in a complaint for overzealous policing. I'm sure they wouldn't care either way.

As I expected, the warmer weather, causing me to leave doors open, has provoked an extension of the theatre of operations.
The entire house is just being inspected and, in particular, it has been noted that the washing up could be eased by a bit of careful pre-cleaning.

After years of owning just black cats, I've found the delights of the ginger cat...loving, very very loving....verging on clingy, no brain cells, & sheds hair like no ones business! Appologys to anyone who should see me out & about as I'm mostly covered in white/ginger cat hair.
