If I pop my optimistic hat on, I'd like to think that most people who wear masks will continue to do so and most who won't, weren't anyway. I'm sure there'll be some drop off but I don't expect to be the only one masked up in Sainsburys any time soon.

And a good retort ready in the bag, from Twitter:

"@Dumily_Chambers
Scene at the coffee shop:

Middle aged white dude, not wearing a mask: you know, the pandemic is over.
Younger woman, in a mask: minding your own farking business isn’t.

And this is how I found my soulmate."

I may have missed something but on what scientific evidence is Boris basing his proposals to lift restrictions?

As much as Matt Cockhand lived up to his name, at least he imposed or at worst/best encouraged some form of control but now it seems like a mere whim to forget what we have had to endure for the last 18 months.

I do not feel very safe anymore despite having both jabs!!

I keep hearing how amazing we are at our vaccine rollout, but also that hospital admissions are climbing again rapidly (about 50% higher than 3 months ago and 4x higher than 6 weeks ago). These two pieces of data really don't sit together comfortably in my head, because either the vaccine isn't working or the virus is extremely rapidly spreading just amongst a smaller percentage of the population.

I'll still be wearing my mask and constantly sanitising . Just wishing they'd have kept the mask wearing at least.

Noticed today while out food shopping ,already not many sanitising hands and trolleys and pretty sure there can't be that many exempt shop staff and customers !

The new cases is school's are alarming, where whole classes are being asked to shield, especially as these are the very people who've not received their vaccines yet.

Minime has just finished year 11, but in the last few weeks many of the children were sent home to isolate. She's currently doing delayed work experience (all arranged by herself to make up for missing out on it last year - proud mum moment) at the local primary school, she's supposed to be helping with year 4, but they are isolating.... So she's with year 2 who have only just come back from isolating....

... after how ill I've been in the last month, I'm seriously worried.

I don't think there is any. It seems entirely based upon "if we can't open now when we have the summer months and school holidays, when can we?" which is a stance I can understand, to an extent, but not when we are still very much IN a pandemic.

I'm just baffled by how cut-throat it is, to be honest. I expected stuff like masks and social distancing to be around through the winter at least and never imagined that gigs and sporting events would be given the go ahead with zero restrictions, this soon.

This is telling.

It looks to me they are using the "summer firebreak" to prepare for a possibly difficult winter in 2 ways
1.ensure the vaccine programme is protecting as many people as possible ready for the upcoming winter (covid and flu)
2. Building as much immunity for the normal seasonal illnesses as possible. so the population is ready for a difficult winter. as their lack of exposure due to covid mitigation measures may place them at greater risk of hospitalisations due to their waining immunity. this at a time when the NHS is expected to be under pressure.

That's the point the seasonal illnesses are not "rife" right now but out there, there by allowing a slow burn through the community. Allowing population immunity to slowly build through the coming months.

Enjoying a drop of red.

I can't help but feel that you are putting far more thought into this than Boris has.

Slow burn? I suspect not, it's going to rip through the unvaccinated if current figures are a gauge. Not that I care about them, but they'll live long enough to spread it to others who try to shield. Anyone immunocompromised is basically in full isolation again from the 19th.

Someone had asked in an earlier post, if track & trace actually contact people.... They do... I'm off work poorly, my colleague is of having received notification that she needs to isolate... We were having a good old natter on the phone this morning when they rang her to make sure she was in!

Mmm, if it's a mobile number, does that make sure that she is in - at home?
