I see quite a few hares when cycling in the lanes Gnosall - unless it is the same hare, keeping fit. Mostly in the fields either side of the lane between Gnosall and the main road to Woodseaves.

Earlier this year I had my own tortoise-hare experience when cycling on the lane that goes through Ellenhall, then across the Eccleshall and Newcastle roads. Just past the calf in a coat and the barking dog, I was climbing laboriously up a hill with a hedgerow on my left. Racing me on the other side of the hedge, was a hare. He easily beat me on the climb but I had the weight advantage on the descent.

Some of them take it very seriously.

..contains some forthright commentary..

Poor thing!

The first hare I ever saw was running at full pelt, through the centre of the village of Outwoods, pursuing a runner. I was shocked by the size of the hare as well as its evident determination. My then neighbour hadn't realised he was being followed until he saw me, wordless, pointing.

It still ranks as one of the open-mouthed, surprising sights of my life.

Entries are now open for this:

http://www.novaraiders.org.uk/route66

It is a really nice, friendly and well organised event with a beer tent, barbecue etc at the finish. Two routes - the Route 33 and Route 66. I did the shorter one last year and have entered the 66 this year.

Very much recommended for an opportunity to try completely different cycle routes, enjoy some gorgeous scenery and not feel as if you have accidentally strayed into the Tour de France. They even had tractors and trailers parked up, piled with bananas along the way.

It poured down last year. I am hoping for better weather and that I don't take twice as long as everyone else to finish the long route. Imagine if they've all paced up and are waiting to go home...

The excellent pasty shop is opening on Sundays from next weekend, with a special welcome for cyclists.

As well as pasties (including vegetarian options) the shop does soups, yumtious cakes, salads and drinks. The people are lovely and trying really hard to build a good business. You can eat in or take away.

So if you are out cycling or just fancy a Sunday treat, do try it. It is in St Mary's, which is the cobbled street behind the church. You can park right outside and they are fine with propping bikes against the shop. When there are too many bikes to do that, people seem to put them at the side of the church.

We're doing kilo to go at the end of the month. Today I did the longest ride I've ever done, 40 miles. The most interesting animal I passed was a 3 legged terrier who seemed to be taking himself for a walk, then a house built on a sandstone edge with its garden below near Edgmond
I may have to buy it (if it ever becomes available).

Highly recommended if you fiddle with your own bike.

Lidl should have the cycle-stand in again next Thursday (April 3rd), if there's anybody left that hasn't already got one..

Shall have to get one of those.

We did the Kilo to go ride this morning. 62.5 miles, the furthest I've done, and I managed to average 1mph faster than I do on a short ride, not sure how...
