Insurance are now saying they can't write it off here as it needs to be in the UK, surely thats their problem? Original plan was we got it bodged together at their cost just to get it home then they write it off once back, but they're seemingly reluctant. Talking about us getting a settlement then buying it back off them but if it's broke why would I want that? Luckily time is on our side, we're in no rush, so can drag it out and waste their time if thats how the game is going to be played.

Wow!!!

Can you still buy Trabants or Lada Riva estates over there?
Favourite cars over here are the ones imported from Germany after they don't want them, so knackered BMWs and Audis are the preferred vehicle of the younger generation whereas ex-taxi Toyotas with half a million miles on the clock are preferred by the older.

Does anyone know the best place to sell a vintage Hornby Train Collection?
Husband wants to sell it as a job lot.
This is just some of it, there’s quite a bit more.
We wondered if there were any collectors locally that might be interested.

There are regular toy/train fairs at the Showground - the next is in August.

What I can see there is more of interest to the 'collector' now, rather than current model enthusiasts, but there is still a market for it, especially with the boxes for the collector market.

There will be dealers there, Vectis and 'Along Classic Lines, for example, who may offer various methods of disposal, auction, direct selling, commission, etc.

Asking the same question about a 50 year old stamp collection.

Are they worth anything nowadays?

Going further afield Rails of Sheffield buy & sell such things, and there are a number of auction house that specialise in model railways & railwayana. There is one in Yorkshire but I can't remember the name. Internet search brings up quite a few, but I don't know anything about them

This is the rest of it.

As @Gramaisc said this is definitely one for a collector especially as they are boxed and in excellent condition by the looks of it.

A quick check shows that the LMS Coronation (the maroon steam engine) is worth about £80-£100, if you get the right collectors interested, as is the Minic Fire Engine. I didn't check the rest but being in their original boxes will increase their value.

If you do a Google search for model railway collectors you'll find a number of collectors. I used Howes when I sold some of my Dad's engines.

Please make sure you don't get ripped off if you go to a specialist dealer though!

We've got an old Hornby train set. Unfortunately I kept it in the shed I the old house & the mousey mouses have devoured the boxes. So now in my new house shed in a big plastic bag as hubby won't let me sling it.

No where near as valuable collection as @Carole though.

Thanks @Thehooperman , I’ve never heard of Howes but will e mail them and see what they say.

I’ve been to Topp Trains in Marsden road, they are going to contact someone in Telford.

Not sure if it is valuable now actually.
Apparantly the old collectors are old and dying off and the next generations coming through aren’t interested in train sets.
This we know to be true which is why husband has decided to sell instead of passing it down.

The track itself isn’t worth anything, the collectors use different types of track nowadays so it’s just the trains themselves. Some are worth more than others. We’ve just missed the big model railway event at County Showground last weekend.

This is the start of the decluttering (or Swedish Death Clean as my friend rather morbidly calls it) , there are stamp collections and a rather large Scaletrix up in the loft, not to mention his mothers rather hideous , albeit expensive Royal Dux ornaments.

I‘ve been saying to husband for years, no point in them being unused in the loft when someone else can be getting enjoyment out of them.

Some collectors still use the old type of track if they are recreating authentic 60s/70s Hornby model railways.

You could also see if anyone at Stafford Railway Circle can give you any advice if they're still going.

When my parents died I contacted antique dealers with sewing machines , typewriters etc that I'd seen on antique/ auction TV shows going for quite a bit.

They didn't want to know as said it was usually museums who had them , and they've all got them now so want no more.

But as I went to answer the door to BHF blokes who'd come to look at the furniture, I left one of the dealers in the lounge ( I thought). But he'd apparently gone upstairs , had a mooch in mum's jewellery box:o and said he'd be interested in taking the jewellery off my hands. I wasn't even getting rid of that , cheeky ****!

Well, on the train set story, everyone keeps saying “make sure that you don’t get ripped off “ but without knowing what it’s actually worth, it’s difficult to know what is a fair price.

Out of the ones we’ve contacted so far, only one company has replied.

Howes, “the longest serving model shop in the country”, based in Oxford have offered to buy the complete set on condition that we either post it or deliver it in person.

Their offer is the grand sum of £50. A polite, thank you but no thank you was my reply.

Next idea is to visit Stafford Railway Enthusiasts Club next week.

The empty boxes are worth that, to the right buyer.

I'm surprised Howes responded like that, I found them quite reasonable. There are others that will collect if you do the search that I mentioned previously.

Also if you Google the model number e.g. Triang Hornby R871, etc. you'll get an idea of what others are asking for.
