I love sayings (and if known their origin) and wondered if other people did too and wanted to share.
one of my favourite that is largely misconstrued is....
It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey . Sometimes abbreviated to 'Brass monkey weather'
This is an old naval term as a brass monkey was a metal triangle used on Galleons (like one used to set the red balls for snooker) The Brass monkey was used to stack the cannon balls up in a pyramid formation and when the weather was really cold the salty sea water that had splashed on them would freeze and make the top ball fall off hence it was cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey
