Guildhall closure?

There's only entertainer, fragrance shop, money exchange and a jewelry place for which I can't remember the name of. Plus the other jewelry and body shop by the doors.

The rent and rates on these places must be amazingly low, I honestly cannot fathom how any of them meet rent let alone payroll.

I refuse to believe there are enough people in Stafford that frequent The Fragrance Shop to keep it afloat, that kind of business is hard enough to keep going at the best of times as it only sells one type of product and it’s hardly the type of product purchased highly regularly

Things could be changing

That looks awful, and if that's the best they can come up with that's extremely worrying. It looks like the old magistrates court which we just pulled down.

The current Guildhall lets in loads of natural light. This new one looks like it lets in hardly any, apart from the front facing windows. Also I'd like to know what the split is going to be in the new Guildhall between residential, and retail.

The aerial view suggests just several unsightly blocks of flats with a few shops on the ground floors.
If nobody wants the flats because of the lack of car parking and the unaffordable rents they could probably be used to house more asylum seekers.

Nice visualization:roll:, so the market is definitely going then, kinda thought that the clowncil would have told us first
I think the markets been on borrowed time for awhile, it's probably why they haven't bothered to renovate it .

Hopefully money's been ring fenced as part of the north end town development, and they'll get rid of either the coop or old M&S and put it there. Of course, they could do away with it altogether due to falling footfall, and just keep an outdoor one during the summer months and Christmas etc.

Realistically though , the market part probably could do with being pulled down and redone. It's looking very tired and dated as it is, and is probably costing an absolute fortune to keep warm in the winter months too.

High running costs vs low stall usage will be the reason to kill it off, so I suspect they'll want a few years of proven loss to be given the green light to just get rid entirely.

Unsightly blocks of flats? This is a town centre development, what’re you expecting it to be made up of? Low rise urban living has to be part of the solution to the housing crisis since we live in a world of NIMBY’s who decry and house building on just about any land, despite the need for circa half a million new homes a year.

For what it matters, I think this is a well thought out and, as new developments in small towns go, attractive design that adds to to the town rather than takes away. There’s extra courtyard and outdoor space in those plans which is a win for everyone.

When the planning submission is made, I’ll be commenting in support .

I'm always happy for any large scale town residential development - flats in town is what will keep all pubs you all like talking about so much alive. I like the idea that it will open up routes through that part of town again. Not being able to walk from St. Mary's to Crabbery street annoys me so much.

And I hope the market is rehomed somewhere sutible, although last time I walked through looking for things all the stalls let me down.

Looking at it I only see bits that will be in almost constant darkness, which is a shame. Placing the courtyards to the south rather than north of the long multi storey block would make more sense but I guess they don't own the part right of the entrance so just ran from the entrance they do own.

Whats the small building about to lose all daylight? I can't place it?

EDIT: I also love that they coloured in all the roofs green to make people think it looks more natural than all the other buildings around. Should be solar panels on all that!

I wondered if it was Redrum or a bit of that? Sems to be too far east though. There's nothing else that fits looking at Google Earth.

Redrum should be right opposite cash converters? Can\t place that building as it's inside the old market or at least where it joined the guildhall. Not where pecadillos is?

EDIT: Nope, way too far 'inside' the old space.

If it's as residential as it looks, we might expect there to be a lot of cars associated with the residents.

I don't see any obvious facility for those. Unless that's a multi-storey car park, running towards the Market Square.
