They always recruit for Christmas. The shops weren't shut at the end of October. You can't just recruit and train someone in next to no time.

Internet shopping was always going to be massive this year. I can only speak from personal experience but all the parcels I've expected delivered by couriers I've both received on time and on the correct day. Royal mail? Zilch. So couriers can get the staff and train them but not Royal mail? I'm not buying that I'm afraid .

I've spent the day in the roof - doing some mods to the heating system - and getting a lot of the scale out of the cold storage tank.

I was going to dig it in in the veg plots, but I think I'll just dry it out and flog it to @staffordjas

The scale where I currently am is quite soft and tends to fall off the side of the polythene water tank, until it reaches a point where the residues from the avalanches can risk being drawn into the outflow pipes. I first did it after ten years and that was about fifteen years ago - it just kept getting put off, but having other jobs to do up there made it worthwhile doing now.

The heating header tank overflow is into the cold storage tank, which I've never liked and always intended to improve, although it wasn't a problem - until now - a recent event with a thermostat issue did cause a flow out into the lower tank recently, hence the tinted water in the photo below.

I managed to do this, plus re-siting the thermostat closer to the boiler, without falling through the ceiling.

Apparently British Airways are dispensing with the 474 airplane and selling bits and bobs off, like glasses and cutlery, @Carole might be a bit of nostalgia there for yourself? I can't remember the website he mentioned tho. Even the heated trolleys are up for purchase!

I was quite emotional to see the 747’s go.
I did look at the site selling the items but I’ve really got nowhere to put a big trolley.
it was this site
https://www.whatabuy.co.uk/british-airways/general

I’ve already got small bit and bobs to remind me.
And the memories, fabulous memories.

OIY ! :cops: I know my oats

Getting fed up of my diet now after 3 months , and wondering why the hell I let so much weight creep on in the first place !

So far lost 3 stone , gone booze free for over 10 weeks , and looking nothing like my fat-faced passport photo that I've just dug out for ID.

But determined to keep plodding on with it for another 11 days to (hopefully) lose another 2lbs to reach my ideal weight target .

Then the christmas relaxation begins :)

The plan is to maybe get back into running again in the New Year .....

I don't understand this mail backlog and shit service. An idiot could work out that the shops being closed and Christmas upcoming would lead to an increase in online shopping. How did royal mail not manage to prepare even in the slightest. More staff, that sort of thing? Sent a parcel first class recorded last Saturday. Still not arrived to London.

You can claim your postage refund back online using a really simple form if it doesn't arrive in time!

I've just claimed for the very important documents I sent to my solicitors guaranteed next day delivery which actually arrived no faster than second class...

That's amazing, and just shows what cutting down on alcohol can do. I'm sure you'll get to your target in no time at all.

Because "more staff" isn't what they do except in mail centres, maybe training or health and safety being the reasons.
It's always relying on the 'good will' of those delivering doing overtime no matter how knackered they are, and then if some are off with coronavirus or isolating mail delays will be inevitable.

But cutting down on alcohol can be unhealthy.
Last year I used about 290 pubs, some of them quite often, but since March I've all but given up alcohol.
My weight has increased with not walking to pubs and my mental health has deteriorated with not meeting people.

As well as cutting booze out , I've cut out all things like crisps, biscuits & choccies etc.
Also walked miles each day ( always walked a lot anyway ).
Used to race marathons / half marathons etc in my Stafford Harriers days , and win prizes in UK and abroad. But those days are long gone and I will be happy if I can just plod steadily along a mile or so ( knees and ankles permitting)
Miss going to the pub , but it's helped not having the choice to go or not to shift the weight . I'm not one to sit there with a diet coke when the cider pumps are beckoning :D

Can't see our booking for a New Years Eve meal at our local going ahead, being doubtful we will drop out of tier 3 by then.
But the printed off confirmation sits on the shelf in hope....

I've had the complete opposite, I'm fitter than I've been since my early twenties! I miss the people, yes, but I'm not missing the alcohol. I have maybe 3 bottles of cider per week, usually just at weekends.

I'm worried for the future of pubs, and I do miss them, but suspect I'll be using them a lot less when they reopen. I great side effect being since March I've saved about 300 quid a month, despite also having about 100/m extra outgoings for the car.

I’ve also cut the booze out, decided to knock it on the head in the middle of August, and apart from one evening six weeks ago I haven’t touched a drop and I feel massively better for it.

Before the second lockdown we went to a neighbours house (6 of us in total) for a socially distance drinks evening where I had tonic water.
The evening was lovely with much hilarity but someone commented that if a stranger walked in the room he wouldn’t be able to pick out the sober person. I think he meant that I’m very loud even without a drink but it just confirmed to me that with the right company you can still have a great time without alcohol.

@Mudgie it’s a shame that you feel the only exercise you can get is walking to a pub. There are so many lovely walks on our doorstep and stopping and passing the time of day with other walkers is lovely. I had a very long chat with a fellow walker the other day, about half an hour, we ended up walking together, never met this person before.

There are other ways to meet people, it just requires a little effort and imagination.

I didn't "decide" to give up beer. Coronavirus and the government's restrictions did that for me as I've never been one for drinking t home.
I'm actually very quiet with or without a drink.
It's that the best, rather than only, exercise you can get is walking to a pub.
With living on the edge of town there are indeed a few decent walks on my doorstep and I have had the occasional chat with other walkers.
I'm not aware of "other ways to meet people" during the pandemic. And it's meeting old friends rather than meeting new people that I miss.

Well the current regulations allow meeting up with one other person outside for a walk.
I’ve seen at least one friend every day even if it’s just a chat for 10 minutes or so.
People can make excuses about not meeting friends or not getting exercise but for others “where there's a will there’s a way”.

Yes, but most people I know in pubs wouldn't be inclined to meet up with one other person outside for a walk.
It's not about making excuses, they just wouldn't want to.

If you were unable to drink anymore, would you still spend your life in the pub?

I used to spend all my free time in the pub too, and I certainly intend to return, but I've realised I really don't want to drink every day anymore. I miss my friends, but my parents aren't that well and I'm going to stay careful for now so I've only visited the pub twice since March and was sat outside for one.

I've spent much of my life asleep, working, with family and following other interests and so several hours a week over fifty years never amounted to "your life in a pub"
If I was "unable to drink anymore" I would probably be unable to get to a pub.
