Must-Eat places in Stafford

I think the problem is that a restaurant that doesn't cater for its local market usually fails miserably. Whilst I would love better places to eat, I'm not really willing to spend more than £20/person on food most of the time. I don't eat out that regularily, if I did it would be less per meal. Obviously I'll spend more on special occaisions, but they are few and far between. I suspect the majority of locals think the same, and unless those special one-offs are enough to keep a posh place going it will fail.

People in Stafford don't tend to do fine dining, because our wallets don't support it. Or for some of us paying the mortgage is more important that filet mignon served with foie gras.

How do I edit this?
(2) What are the best bang-for-your-buck places (on a budet)?
(3) What is the best if you are not on a budget?
There's no where in Stafford that's really off the chart when it comes to the bill. Vivere is a decent little Italian (£45 for two of us the other day - 2 mains, 2 starters, garlic bread and a bottle of the house red). There's many good Indians (and only one or two poor ones). The Swan is where we seem to end up for anniversary meals and stuff pretty decent, but still not Gordon Ramsey and no where near what I'd consider 'posh' prices (usually about £60 for the two of us).

There's some truth in John Marwood's assertion that Stafford's a bit of a two-for-a-fiver kind of eating out. Having lived in the commuterland south & the newly done up bits of Liverpool any of those places are pretty good value in the scheme of things, but whenever I go to them I'm told they're outrageously expensive. Chain restaurants do well here, we've got Pizza Hut, Frankie and Bennies, Bella Italia and Pizza Express. The Pie and Ale House serve pieminister food. Apres, The Yard, The Radford Bank, The Wildwood and several others mentioned in this thread are chain pubs, serving chain pub food, which is obviously popular, but not quite my cup of tea.

(4) Where is nice to just sit and have a coffee and a snack/cake etc?
I like the Bank House for a coffee or a light lunch (good homemade student cooking type stuff - I like the veggie burritos), I don't remember them serving cake though. The Soup Kitchen is worth a visit.

(5) Best Take-Away?
Romance on Wolverhampton Road for pizza. Prospect Road Fish Bar for Fish & Chips. Abdul's, Curry Kuteer or Spice Delight for Curry (we're kind of spoiled in that regards). I've yet to find a Chinese I like in Stafford.

Generalisation warning

Stafford people who have not lived elsewhere do not understand good food ....Further afield ...try the gt western in wolverhampton for grey peas and bathams
Obviously, because a packet of scratchings and a warm cheese and onion sandwich really is where it's at for the great Midlands culinary experience??? Do us a favour.
You heard then?

I have only scan read this but I don't think anyone has mentioned the chinese buffet, which I believe is called the golden orient. I have eaten there twice now with no complaints whatsoever. Great food, reasonably priced if you're fat bastard like me and they don't seem to have any problem whatsoever with adults using the chocolate fountain with profiteroles :D

EDIT: Said establishment is up on the north A34 junction somewhere around here.
I find it best at week-ends when they are turning greater quantities of food over, during the week the food is sometimes in the hot trays a bit too long and loses flavour.
The Golden Orrient is ok but the quality and variety of food varies. Buffet Island in Newcastle is far better. It has a sushi and a teppanyaki section as well.

Mind you this is the town that gets excited about 8 pence bread rolls but never discusses the origin, contents or taste ..

Austerity??? You do get the feeling that there is no recession when you look at forumites restaurant eating habits! But as someone at the Pleasure Beach Blackpool once said....Stafford = Posh!
