Shakespeare in the Gatehouse.

Enjoying a drop of red.
Was Brian Blessed's half-empty show on a nice evening?

If it was, perhaps a lot of people took the opportunity to have picnics outside, along Eastgate Street and Martin Street, where they could still hear him?
We could hear him from Brocton.

That was more in response to the Brian Blessed comment of it only being half full. Things are very different now then in 1998.

I've had such mixed experiences at the castle shakespear last few times I'd been (including memorably Romeo and Juliet being entierly rained off) that I've no issue with it being in the gatehouse, that works much better for me, but I don't have two tickets worth spare cash at the moment + whatever a babysitter would cost and I suspect I'm not alone in that.

(Also, it's not my favourite play and it's one I've seen before - had it have been something fresh to me I might have been able to find the money.)
I once watched merchant of Venice at the open air theatre in Cornwall in the rain. It was still great the outdoor setting just added to the experience.
As a child saw Macbeth at Stratford but can't remember anything about it really.

Was that the one at Minack ?
I saw it from a boat five years ago.

I've seen quite a few outdoor productions of Shakespeare at a variety of venues and they always seem much better than indoor performances.

1998? Was that in response to my post? only I said I saw him in 2018 in Shrewsbury on a very cold evening (it was when we had the beast from the east) yet it was a full house.

Anyone been , is it worse than at the castle ?
We went on Saturday evening. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would to be fair. The Gatehouse have also made an effort with the decor all around the theatre. We got a deal on the tickets which were £20 each which seemed about right. I think they are being a bit optimistic with the £35 full price.

I’ve seen it twice and I shall be there again tomorrow in my capacity as Stafford Gatehouse Front of House Volunteer.

I was initially one of those people wondering how it would work not being at The Castle, however once we got told what they had planned, the volunteers got extremely excited about the production.

We know what we have lost, but truly, no one could have imagined what we have gained. The response so far has been fantastic.

The production, the direction, the staging, the lighting are all just wonderful and couldn’t have been achieved at the castle.

With a fabulous West End cast, there’s nothing not to love.

And anyway, if you went to see Shakespeare in his birthplace at Stratford, well, you’d be inside anyway.

I say, come with an open mind, read the reviews, support local theatre, enjoy this wonderful show.
