The Post House in Stafford

Well I went in last night just for evening drinks post Swan. What a beautiful place you can definitely see where the money has gone. On walking in you are greeted by 2 members of staff, one a doorman the other a girl dressed in their grey/pink uniform who greets you very politely and opens the door for you. Inside there were plenty of staff manning the bar and the surrounding area and they were all very polite - the girls were all stunning and so were the men I guess ;). 2 pints were ordered - ok a bit on the steep side at £3.55 I think each but not the end of the world - nice little touch your change is given back to you on a silver tray. Standing at the bar we see Derek Foster himself very involved with the running of the place - there was a small puddle of spilt beer on the bar he noticed and within seconds it's gone.

We started speaking to one of the doormen asking if we could see the upstairs - he went off and within a minute Derek Foster was back - he had our drinks put behind the bar and then proceeded to give us a full tour of the place. He took us upstairs to see the upstairs restaurant and the separate function rooms (of which there are 3) they all have their own ipod/ipad docks so you can play your own music - also projectors which he says you can bring your own movies - or they have a choice of 150 in house movies. Everything has been finished to the highest standard and no expense spared - turning the lights on upstairs wasn't done by flicking a switch - but by a touch screen panel on the wall!

Moving through there was another large room with a small dancefloor with it's own bar. This room also has it's own private entrance accessed round the back by the old staff car park, so if you want to avoid the goings on downstairs your group can come and go as you please.

Any rumours of the chef leaving are untrue. We were introduced to him - also given his business card with his direct dial number on to book. His name is Matt Pickop - googling him brings up his history - but most noticeably he spent many years working for Gordon Ramsey. For functions Derek says they are very flexible - if you want to spend £25 per head then they will work with you to put something together - or if you want a full 6 course the sky the limit. They will cater for what you want. He was aware of some of the comments he had been receiving but he spoke very honestly and admitted he had had problems but they are all getting together now and getting ironed out slowly.

Coming back down the side stairs - you come down to the "nightclub" - the bar is very impressively laid out. It was fairly busy for a Friday night considering the rest of the town was fairly quiet - the Swan was very quiet. There wasn't any music on as such - no DJ but some background music which was just enough. Anyway we shook hands and wished him all the best - it was nice of him to take 10-15 minutes of his time to show us round. Hopefully they can sort their daytime service that people are mentioning and end up getting a good name for themselves - it deserve to do well the amount of time and money that has been put into it. I'll definitely be going back to sample the food - and definitely use it again as a stop off for a few beverages on a night in the town.

My lovely hubby booked a table for two at The Pillar restaurant. I did not know anything about the Posthouse so was wonderfully surprised when I arrived. The welcome received was warm and friendly. What a breath of fresh air, finally a taste of London has arrived in Stafford. This establishment is exactly what Stafford needs! A high end, quality experience where you feel relaxed and well looked after. There really is something for everyone here including families with young children.
We began our evening in the cocktail lounge which was cosy and intimate, we then were escorted to our table upstairs. Our waiter Oliver was friendly, helpful and attentive. We were even privy to the help of the wine advisor Matt. Together we chose a delicious bottle of red which complemented our choice of food excellently. The bottle of wine we chose was approx £30. It was an excellent bottle of wine. I feel that at times when i have experienced fine dining, i am sold a bottle of wine for this price and it is no better than a £7-£10 bottle of wine from the supermarket. This was certainly not the case in this instance and felt that the wine chosen was certainly worth the price we paid. We were offered a choice of bread and some wonderful canapes. We had scallops to start which were scrumptious. A surprising amuse bouche arrived which was delicious. Following this, our main courses arrived. I had the venison and my hubby had the steak. Our dishes by far exceeded our expectations. The venison was delectable, my husbands steak was in his words 'the best he had tasted'. After this we were both brought some raspberry sorbet and panna cotta, this was lovely. Then for our chosen pudding we had the chocolate fondant with vanilla pod icecream. Again we were not disappointed.
We have both been to some of the best restaurants in the world including Michelin star ones and we are just delighted to have found somewhere near to where we live that offers this level of food, atmosphere and service.
On leaving the restaurant a delightful gentleman approached us and asked us what we thought. I thought this gentleman was a fellow diner but he was in actual fact Mr Foster, the owner. A charming and personable gentleman who obviously cares about how his customers feel. His desire to meet all our needs is evident and his aspiration in achieving this is paramount.
I feel that this establishment will be the place for people to come. It's not trying to be something it's not, it is what it is. I feel this place deserves to have the support of the local people so that we can all enjoy what is on offer here. The only difficulty i could say i have had is the different positive supperlatives to use to describe what a fantastic evening we experienced. I have taken the trouble to write such a detailed post as i have since found out that some people have already said some really negative things about the posthouse. Whilst i am a great believer in people having their own opinions, please give this place a chance. Go along and see what you think, i assure you, you really won't be disappointed!

wildwood,

Did you point him in the direction of this thread? Even if he doesn't sign up and reply it will give him food for thought for improvements, I'm yet to go in myself, I must cajole myself into going in, in the new year :)

Thank you Curlysue for such a good post and reporting on the high end dining which myself and many others on here will never justify spending on(and I make that comment with no malice, good for you,it's your money and you choose how to spend it) As you say we now have a venue that you would expect in a big city and if it becomes a sucsess will put Stafford on the map and that is why I sincerly hope the Post House is a sucsess. I don't venture into town many nights but when I have it's always seemed very quiet.
Stafford now has some quality pubs, the sun,the rose and crown, the swan hotel and the bear, the pie and ale house, and the new wetherspoons opening soon, hopefully more people will be attracted into town.
To it's credit the post house is catering for a wide range of customers not just the fine dining but more imformal dining and a snack menu and the drinks are fairly priced considering the surroundings.

A round of drinks at the Posthouse was quite a bit cheaper than a round at The Swan. Despite liking the Swan, i find that the tables are usually sticky which is a real bug bear :( I loved the post house as you can tell and i will certainly be returning. I will feedback on this again to see if i find it to be the same high standard! Happy dining fellow Staffordians!! :)

Thats a few of us happy with our visits in the last week or so - I do hope that they are coming to the end of their teething troubles.

Did anyone go there for new year? I heard it cost £99 to get in (free glass on champers) but the rest you buy yourself

We visited the Post Hose last night for the second time in a week and were once again hugely impressed with the service, the food, the surroundings, the innovation and the value.
There are a lot of rumours floating around the town about the restauarant and its service and pricing policy. I think this is because it offers fine dining which is to Michelin standard with the accompanying price point, but it also offers fabulous food and drink in the Bistro. Seven of us dined there last night and the bill including all drinks and wine was £199. Two of us had one of the Specials for the night which was one of the tastiest T-Bone steaks I have eaten anywhere. The headchef came out and a had a chat with us about the meal and was looking for feedback. Then the owner joined us for ten minutes and explained that they have hired 80 people and most of the staff are new and learning. He was aware that some peole had had a bad experience due to the staff climbing the learning curve, but he seems determined to make the restaurant a magnet for all foodies between B'ham and Manchester.
They have invested a huge amount in the surroundings. They have a top class chef and caring management. They have become a substantial employer and I am sure that as more people experience what they have to offer they will get a handsome return on their investment. the pricing in the bars and Bistro is no more expensive than most places in and around Stafford. If you havent been yet, check it out. I think that Stafford will become very proud of The Post House.

Another first time poster praising The Post House.... hope you can stick around gazzapster.... and welcome to the forum.

I notice PsyberPixie and iknow.uk.com didn't come back after their mass of praise of the place.

I do always wonder the same thing myself, but I would like to hope they are genuinely happy customers.

I'm quite shocked there's stilll been no comments from the post house themselves on here, I find it hard to belive they don't know about this place. Especially as it comes up in the first few links on google.

As said earlier, I emailed them a link. They replied to the email but never visited, at least visibly. It is hard to trust one hit posters but let's just see if they turn up again.

and caring management.
interesting to see yet another poster praising the posthouse with no prior history of posting, either its so amazing that people feel they must find some outlet to express their joy and then search through the net, find this site and then manage to get through the hundreds of threads to post in here or theirs something fishy going on. (or am i being cynical??)

in either case the quote about caring management is an interesting one, how would a customer know the management are caring. in actual fact i have heard some very negative things about how staff are treated. i would be specific but i dont to risk being sued or anything.

On another point i think they should be engaging with social media and the locals via mediums such as this forum/twitter/facebook i know they have twitter and facebook accounts but there is not alot of activity on the networks. they could learn a lot from the lewis partnership who are very active on social media.

I too have heard some negative things, I mean they have had to employ more than 80 members of staff, they keep leaving from what I have heard! Surely thats got to be down to bad management through not training up the young staff.

We went in for lunch last week and it was really nice. Staff were good if not a little shy in some cases. Kept it simple and lots of little lunchtime bites and it was all nice and not over expenise. It did help tho when they got the drinks bill wrong.....well.....it was Xmas! ;)
