It's for disposing of any left-over water or wine - they had to go straight into a soakaway and not into the drains. And for the water that the priest used to wash his hands during the Mass.
It was built in 1382, soakaways were probably state-of-the art then.

"Left-over wine"? I suspect @proactive wouldn't be a believer in that aspect...

I believe that clergymen are required to drink any surplus wine at a service to prevent it being used for non-church purposes.

A middle aged man at the self checkout in Sainsbugs, trying to buy a bottle, or two of alcohol without having the help of the lovely assistant. He weren't half swearing under his breath. ''Stupid farking rules, stupid farking alarms'' + a few more choice words. I thought he was going get a reprimand and a belt by the bloke stood at the next till with a small child in a pushchair. Shame he didn't.

I never saw you, though I did scan the place.
The girl on the self checkouts was a slim, I want to say with mousey hair, lady, wears glasses. Told me shes 39! Didn't think she was that old.
Ah! Claire, yes she is, she looks about 18! She's 40 this year, lovely girl.

I was at lunch if Claire was there... Shame I missed the fun.

That Garsdale up in the Yorkshire Dales is getting snow right now. There's a 'live' cam on Youtube, mainly for scenery, but the occasional train tootles along.
Would be nice if there was one showing the trains coming through Happy Valley (Stafford).,
