Euro 2016

Not only do they not have to watch it, they don't actually have to read a thread entitled
"Euro 2016" if football bores them so much.

why bother?

So they don't like football?

Ok fair enough, they have made a point. Now go away and leave the rest of us alone.

Not knocked out yet, but if i were UEFA i would seriously issue a warning to the effect that the England team will be disqualified from the Tournament if there is ANY trouble in Lens.

I cannot even begin to express the sadness in my heart - i know it is likely to be more complex than has been hitherto reported, as @bigbluewolf has alluded to elsewhere, but even so...

I went to Italy in 1990, hitchhiking, got a lift with a van load of Scots - big camper van - going to Turin for the last Group Stage game against Brazil...

* this was the Tournament, lest we forget, that the Group that England was in were effectively 'quarantined' on Sardinia, such was the fear of violence from the England 'fan's *

... i'm quite sure i've told certain aspects of this story before, especially sure the one with Fish and his flag.

One of the things that 'sticks' about this whole episode was a conversation i had with one of the inmates ( though memorable and one of those 'i can't believe i did this, but i did' sort of things that you've done in your life, at the time it was really quite awful, after only two and a half days i virtually threw myself out of the van at the very first red traffic light in Turin - i felt really bad for everyone who was tied to the Goodship Bad Trip, they, after all, faced a road trip from Turin back to Scotland that one can only begin to imagine how custodial it must have felt by the end) about the Scottish fans 'on tour'.

This was back in the day that Scotland had a reasonable record of reaching finals, and they had, too, started to shake off a reputation for making trouble whenever they did, wherever they were at.

The man in the van was quite clear about what had effected the turnaround in the reputation of the Scots as footballing fans - it came from within. He literally said that younger fans would get 'a kick up the arse' from their elders if they started getting lairy. It worked - i saw thousands of Scots having the greatest party imaginable, as they enjoyed the whole scenario of having been knocked out already anyway, and having to go home.

What those fans understood is that these are the Finals - to even get there is an achievement. They had an invite to the Party, and goddam they were going to party hard until bedtime.

I thought that England were approaching this level of awareness. These are the Finals. To have got here is an achievement. All it takes is a few wiser heads kicking a few dumber arses.

If it can't be done from the inside, it'll have to be done from without - it's not like France needs any more shit, i think they've taken quite enough of late without 'us' adding to it.

Oh, well......
That's the spirit!

Lots of positives, very well played for much of the game, many v.good individual performances, bit disappointing not to score from 'open' play but lots of good chances.

Shades of a team that might 'grow into' the Tournament?

One can only hope. Though not the greatest of football fans, I feel England at least has the talent and leadership this year to make decent progress. If only they grab their chances, which they failed to do on Saturday.

It appears that some people may be confused by the way Ireland seems to be getting two goes at this.

This may help to reduce the confusion -

Italy to win it, the only team with a decent defence, also the best manager in the tournament. Shame he's going to Chelsea next season..

Good, but should have been sent down as well.

What is it about football that attracts tossers like this. Clearly he isn't really interested in football, more in causing as much shit as possible, so why are scum like this attracted to football?

This isn't intended to offend anyone because I know that the vast majority of football fans don't cause any problem at all, I'm just interested what attracts the scum element to football rather than other sports.

It's really just about football providing a medium for expression. It's about them-and-us, macho gang culture, etc. Football gives you a widespread opportunity to interact with other like-minded, but opposing, groups, on a local, national and international basis.

If it wasn't football, it would just be something else.

Irish and Swedish fans expressed their anger at the lack of tear gas being made available for them.
