How to encourage people to set an avatar?

Why does it matter?

It doesn't, in the grand scheme of things. I suppose it's just frustrating when I put a lot of effort into making the place look nice only to see the same blue question mark appear over and over again in a thread because people haven't set an avatar.

Think this is the 2nd I've since being on here. It's the same as my Facebook one, and tbh, I can't be arsed change it.

Which is absolutely fine! I've never changed mine, and likely never will. It's not that I want people to keep changing them (although people are more than welcome to); it would just be nice if they took 30 seconds to set one in the first place, as you have done, Glam. :)

i'm not that fussed about having an avatar tbh

however, its pretty easy to find myself a number 9. at least it would get rid of that annoying 'you haven't set yourself an avatar' pop-up

Exactly! Thank you for doing so, @number9 :) As you say, it isn't a hard thing to do, and gets rid of the annoying message along the top of your screen.

In general, it makes it easier to remember who's who - well, I find that for me it does, anyway.

Although, for some time, I confused ATJ with Fonzie-NL, precisely because of ATJ's avatar..

Exactly. :) When reading a thread, it's much easier to keep track of who is saying what when you have The Fonz talking to a dog, rather than loads of blue questions marks talking to each other!

Why not automatically assign everyone who does not have an avatar or who is a new join the forum knot pic like admin has and then they either choose to keep or change it.

Everyone is automatically assigned an avatar:

It's just that if they don't change it, it can get a bit repetitive looking at the same one over an over again. So even if this was something more exciting, it wouldn't solve the problem!

As @Gramaisc says, if everyone has a different avatar pic, it makes it much easier to keep track of discussions. :)

I think it's quite nice when folks avatars match them in normal life. Gramaiscs and Alan B'stard are prime examples. My hair isn't curly tho, like in my avatar ;)

I like the old avatar thing, they help me keep track of the forumite(s) I like ...and dislike.

I haven't got time for names!

Is there a way using this forum system to "generate" an avatar based on the username, like what Wordpress does?

An awful lot of members here haven't given themselves an avatar. I'm not sure why, so I thought I'd see if there was anything I/other members could do to help those who are "avatarless"?

There is a big scrolling message at the top of The Forum for anyone who doesn't have an avatar, explaining what one is and how to set one, but if anyone would like further help then please just let us know by posting here!

Thanks. :)
Hello Admin! Can you give some guidance on how to produce the best avatar e.g.
(a) should it have the same x and y lengths or will it get cropped?
(b) is there a maximum file size for the avatar?

I couldn't see a big scrolling message at the top of The Forum, perhaps I'm just
being dumb (again!).

Alas, no. It does support Gravatar, though, so you don't even have to upload an avatar if you don't want to - you can choose from an existing one via that service.

The biggest avatar that will appear on The Forum is 192 x 192 pixels, but you can upload any size image and it will be resized. Since it is square, if the image that you upload is not then, yes, it will be cropped accordingly.

I think that message is only visible to those that do not have an avatar set. You appear to have an avatar so don't see the message.

Correct. :)
