How to encourage people to set an avatar?

I struggle with an avatar that should be somebody else's - and a Forum name that is actually another member's real name....

Until i made such an effort, i always thought citricsquid was criticsquid, thus kind of expecting the aforementioned to be determined to 'sift mosquitoes' at the slightest provocation with all tentacles blazing.
After this exercise, the cephalopod in question became much more lemony - or even worse limey, as i once made the mistake of ordering a ceviche de pulpo, the eating of which haunts me to this day.
Then
appeared.
Which was, on the whole, a much more satisfactory state of affairs.
I was scrolling through this thread when my pixelated face caught me by surprise, hadn't seen this post before, presumably when my avatar was lemon related.
My username confuses at least 50% of people, so much so if you google criticsquid it'll say "Did you mean: citricsquid" and someone once drew this:

zebidee is the turquoise blue sea + limestone rock whatsit - not sure if that's the same

the strange star thingy being held in the right hand of someone is a victoria something - victoria b? - i think - an early changer from a previous username that i can't quite remember but had an avatar that always reminded me of Dylan Moran in his Black Books guise
the black emptiness is probably The Stafford Beast after his avatar became unanimated
the strange Yeti thing was Trumpet

The orangey blur was either an earlier incarnation of Joshua or dylanf - remember him? - but pretty sure it's Joshua

The only two i'm nowhere near are the 'Punch' one and the chap in the furs with the white cap - well i say 'nowhere near' but i'm fairly sure i'll get them eventually.

I'm not sure that it was ever really explained - or resolved.

I put an animated picture of Katniss as my signature shooting an arrow but it made my eyes go funny. Strangely enough one of my hobbies as a child was archery my Dad would bring targets home from the cadets hut and we'd practice in the garden. He once took me to camp and while we were there one of the ATC cadets shot a sheep with an arrow and we thought it was dead but luckily its thick woolly coat protected it.
