Parking in Stafford.

Councillor Helen Fisher, cabinet member for highways, said: “We’re introducing a strategy designed to improve the turnover of on-street parking spaces in town centres, market towns and village high streets which will help local businesses and make enforcement easier.

With several town centre car parks now free for 2 hours (or, in the case of Chell Road, eligible for a Sainsbury's refund), I'm not sure that charging for on-street parking is going to help local businesses.

And, given that most of these spaces are currently free for just 20 or 30 minutes, how is it going to improve the turnover of on-street parking spaces.

Fantasy policies are the new way 'forward'.

This has been posted in the Baswich Community Group thread (??!!??):

What a great incentive to attract motorists into the town centre!!

I wonder how they've balanced the extra income from parking fees with the reduction in town centre drivers and hence lower income due to fewer confused motorists being caught in the Mill Bank no right turn fine enigma.

What Stafford needs is the retailer equivalent of press gangs, hunting the suburbs, bundling anyone who looks like a potential shopper into the back of a van and pushing them out by Primark.

This process has been in the pipeline for 4 years.

Unless the council have moved the goal posts the idea is-

- the 30 min free parking stays as it is
- the current policy is beyond 30 mins you have to leave with no return within 2 hours in some cases. This will be replaced with the option of people staying longer but paying beyond the 30 free mins.

That makes sense for the town centre streets, but not sure.of the policy for roads like Brunswick terrace, maybe to stop commuters leaving the vehicle all day

Any idea on how this will "improve the turnover of town-centre parking spaces"?

At face value, it looks like it would generally make it less likely that you might find one vacant.

These spaces are often used by the Blue Badge brigade, to reduce the distances on foot, and seem likely to become rather less available for them under these proposals.

It's not to help the people who use the car parking spaces, it's just to increase revenue for the County Council.

I am shocked by your appalling cynicism.

You do have to wonder how much net income it will actually generate, having purchased machines and whatever else extra costs are incurred. Is an assessment of the expected effects available?

Well on the face of it the idea makes sense. The current 30 minute limit doesn't enable a shopper to spend time in town, it is get in get out.

At least with this idea one has the option of spending longer in town at a potentially cheaper rate than the main car parks. This could be particularly useful for older people or those with mobility issues to get closer to shops they may want to go in the centre instead of parking at riverside, sainsburys etc.

Many of the retailers in town spent years calling for longer street parking, so it would be interesting to know their views.

It would be very disappointing if the council dropped the 30 mins free

The current 30 minute limit is perfect if you just need to nip into the bank and then out again.
