Now I compare them both, I prefer the original, that's weird!
Perhaps the large white area unbalances it!

I think I would have burnt in the hint of foliage in the top right, and no I don't expect you to lol.

Please don't think I'm criticizing, I love the photo, I've never taken a photo myself that
satisfied me completely, I'm one of those people that can't help trying to improve things, usually making them worse!

I agree with that; I prefer the original as well.

And I like the way the reflection of the pole in the water's been photoshopped out, though I think a bit's been missed.

Any sports photographers on the forum?

I've got my team's annual floodlit event coming up and am wondering whether I should even be attempting action shots, or whether I should just stick to 'portraits' of players, coaches and fans on the sideline. My equipment is very much at the DSLR entry level - a 4-year-old Olympus E-500 and a 70/300mm (140/600mm equiv) 1:4-5.6 lens. - Any advice would be very much appreciated. (Oh, and I also use Lightroom, which has rescued many a photo.)

Personally I like the telegraph pole. I think it adds to the photo as it gives some height to the right hand side of the photo and adds interest in the reflection.

What glass?

I used to take shots of locusts all the time with my Sigma 70-300 macro lens, it makes this kinda stuff quite easy. Saying that, it doesn't have the shallow DOP i'd like sometimes at length, although the bokeh is beautiful:
