Sky v Virgin

to answer a few of the points mentioned:

yes , its a lot of money JUST to watch TV ( but i dont just watch tv , i use the internet A LOT and download A LOT as do both my daughters) .
The internet is a lifeline to my wife who cannot get out in the real world without it causing distress so again its worth the money for that alone.

Plenty of TV to watch when bored ( being a carer i can be trapped inside sometimes myself so its handy )

Home phoneline is hardly used , but if i do have to leave the house , my wife can get hold of me as i carry a mobile at all times.

So in reality , its not a lot of money for what we get .

( i used to live in Rocester , near Uttoxeter and paid over £50 per month just for 5mbps broadband and phoneline ( no TV ) and that was over 3 years ago , so £63 a month now is a bargain believe me ;)

Just curious what people use their very high speed connections for ...

Apart from 'that' of course

"that , and some of the "other " :D

streaming services , amazon prime video etc , downloading a multitude of firmware updates for my drones . i also run a server so that takes some bandwidth too :)

that and others in the household doing similar soon racks up the usage and if we all happen to be online at the same time , theres plenty of scope for it all to cope quite easily :)

You are fully entitled to spend your money in whatever way you deem fit. No need to justify yourself to others.

Thanks proactive , its no problem as ive nothing to hide anyway lol.

... I guess it comes naturally to me as with my wife receiving a disability payment and myself classed as a enhanced (24 hours) carer , im used to being scrutinised for what is spent and what on ;)

As @proactive says - you don't need to justify yourself to others, When you're entitled to it, you're entitled to it. Spend it on what you like. The only time it bothers me is when people get it that simply shouldn't be entitled, which unfortunately there are too many of. I know your situation is genuine our friend and don't ever feel like you should justify anything to any of us on here. You're amongst friends. :)

I've just run the test for the first time in a while, and while the provider states a maximum speed of 200mb, mine is 56 with a top speed of 73 in our area.
As Harry Hill would say "It's the power of suggestion!"
They draw you in with what you could have and give you what they can physically provide. The speed from virgin is still way ahead of what the others provide in this area though.

Guess it depends where you are, as I get similar speeds with fibre as you're getting with cable. if I were you though I'd drop down to the 100mb package, no point paying extra for something you aren't getting.

Just rang Virgin media to cancel ( negotiate ;) ) my fibre boadband , tv and phoneline package. walked away with an upgrade on the broadband from 200 to 300 meg , 2 V6 tivo boxes with multiroom , a brand new v3 router and phoneline for £7 less than i was paying for my lower package.

VM retentions are very generous. I finally got my folks to cancel their TV and phone as they have plenty of mobiles and they only watch freeview stuff, any non Freeview can be replaced with Now TV. So they dropped to just broadband and were promptly given 12 months of TV and phone for £2 more than broadband.

We just have VM Business broadband. No phone, no TV. 350 Mbit feels great.

As a note, Speedtest isn't what it used to be. I have to use the Atlanta Google Fibre test to check my speeds - Speedtest.net can't get close. I think their HTML5 tester may not be up to scratch

I am a Virgin internet customer since moving last year, I was a sky TV customer for 18 years but sacked them off a few month ago. However I'm now using nowtv which is better suited because of my shifts. I pay for movies and I occasionally use a day or week pay for sky sports. I also use amazon prime.

The way I've always seen it, Virgin miles better for internet, but prefer sky for TV but virgin a little cheaper I think?

Eitherway we've got Virgin and I use nowtv every now and again for sports / pay for entertainment pass as it isn't much especially as I've got a few months cheap after going to cancel.

Think yours smashes mine perry haha

To be honest , other than downloading very very quickly , you dont really need half of what you are already getting mate.
i like the extra bandwidth due to usually 3-5 devices streaming, downloading as well as fast upload and download to my server.

to show your image , simply copy that link into the image icon on this forums post/reply section. press enter once you have finished the post and you should see it.
