....Or, get the visitors to do it when they turn up tomorrow then treat them to a few beers & a takeaway for their troubles....

I think that is a great idea, the men do manly things with powertools while drinking beer and the wimmin can talk about shopping and stuffs in the kitchen. Hell, I'd happily visit ;)

I hope this doesn't come across as condescending, but as I'm not sure on your level of capability I thought I'd spell out all the steps for you. Feel free to ignore, just thought better too well informed than not enough. God knows I've messed up some simple jobs by thinking I knew what to do when I didn't!

no, the more info the better, as far as i'm concerned!

Mark the holes required with a pencil, once finished go back and check again. I don't have a spirit level in that lot unfortunately, so a keen eye may be required!

i've got a spirit level, fortunately enough.. my foray into DIYing thus far has stretched as far as hanging pictures, so i've got a few bits and bobs (screwdriver set, hammer, spirit level, cheapo cordless drill, etc.)..

Use a very small drill bit first, to make the center hole. This helps a lot when drilling the larger hole, as it keeps it centered.

ah, good tip! never would have thought of this..

Drill the holes with the proper drill bit. Once done loosen the screw from the fixing by about 1cm, then knock it into the wall until the collar is flush. The 1cm sticking out will be enough for the setting tool to grab with.

Slide the screw head down into the setting tool, then press flat against the wall. Pull the two handles together to compress the fixing, it may take two or three goes before it stops moving. Once it does remove the setting tool and reset it with the small handle below. The screw should now be able to be easily removed, while the fixing stays in the wall without moving.

yeah, this is basically what's demonstrated in the second youtube clip you posted, which is incredibly useful!

i bet after all this i don't even try it lol.. ah well, we'll find out tomorrow!

Nooo, do it! It's odd, but it's empowering. Once you realise you can do a small job you start wondering what else you can do. Good luck with it :)

How do I edit this?

There's spirit level apps available for smartphones, or failing that you could always go nuts and get one of the little ones they sell in Poundland....

well that answers that question then: i am definitely not a DIYer..

can't be arsed to go into details - guests will be here in an hour or so and i've got a lot of cleaning up to do - but suffice to say i tried to put up 2 blinds and failed at both! not even going to attempt the curtain pole..

so, back to my original post - can someone recommend someone to put up 2 x curtain poles and 2 x blinds, please? i'm really desperate now, as not only do i not have curtain poles/blinds up, but i also have unsightly holes where they should be!

Bugger, sorry to hear that. I do hate plasterboard, left some impressive holes myself in the past, but not gone wrong yet with those fixings. The main problem is the stuff is so damn weak, if you screw up one hole then the area around it is also to weak to do anything with :(

i didn't even get as far as the fischer fixings!

in amongst all this, i forgot the main reason that i don't DIY: i'm incredibly lazy.. i drilled a few holes, they didn't go exactly as i planned (e.g. hit brick, couldn't drill as far as i wanted, rawl plugs didn't fit) and thought "feck this, i'll get a man in"..

it's not that i can't do these things - it's that i'm too lazy to do them/learn to do them..

i phone that andy dick chap linked above, and he's quoted £40 for an hours work, which should be enough.. it bloody wants to be - i don't fancy spending more than £40 just to drill a few holes and screw some fixings in! but, that's what comes of being a lazy bum, i guess..

There is always money to be made doing stuff that others don't want to. £40 for an hour's work seems steep though for a handyman, is he a proper joiner or something? They charge a lot (although they are very skilled people).

Its callout too I guess, not like he can start another job the second he leaves yours. The real question would be is it worth £40 to you not to have to do it yourself?

Nah, he's got bricks as well as plasterboard now. Could be a bugger of a job, although if thats per hour I'm tempted! :p

ended up getting some chap called Ian to do this, who was recommended by a builder friend.. i don't think he has a website - just goes by the name of Ian's Plastering & Property Maintenance, i think..

he put up a very awkward blind (IKEA :grr: ) and 2 curtain poles - i was out at the time, but the missus was in and said he was a lovely chap and didn't seem to mind at all that the job took longer than he expected, and didn't charge more than we originally agreed.. he's done a brilliant job as well..

so yeah, i'd much rather pay £40 for the convenience of someone else doing it, and doing it well, than waste hours of my life buying equipment, learning how to use it, trial & error, etc.. i'm not saying there's anything wrong with that - just that i'm not a DIYer, so thank god for people like Ian!
