THE south of Stafford urgently needs a strategic plan to protect the area from scattergun housing development and traffic gridlock, residents have been told. The town’s MP, Jeremy Lefroy, is calling for a coordinated plan for development in the Tixall Road, Baswich and Weeping Cross area to avoid residents being left without the roads and other infrastructure to cope with new housing.

Probably one of the most sensible things old Shy-boy Lefroy has suggested during his tenure in Stafford.

We don't need a western access road we need an Eastern bypass.

Never understood why SBC Planning took the Eastern bypass out of the Plan. Let's hope that SCC continue to protect the route otherwise there will be nowhere for it to go unless they decide to go down the route of compulsory purchase.

About twenty years ago, I severely pruned a tree for a chap who is now a councillor, who lived very close to the, even then disputed, route. He was on holiday when I did it and someone, who turned out to be his father-in-law, asked me what I was doing hacking lumps off a tree in the front garden. Just for a laugh, I said that I was clearing line-of-sight for the lasers to mark out the centre of the new road.

If he hadn't nearly passed out on the spot, I think he was going to go for me....

Stafford traffic featured quite heavily in today's breakfast show on Radio Stoke http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0295lf9 1hr5mins in and 1hr40mins for SCC Councillor Mark Winnington's grilling. Not a very good performance from him.

I repeat we don't need a Western Access road we need an Eastern by-pass.

Don't worry, once this is in place at junction 14 everything will be fine:

As stated above, there have been proposals for an eastern bypass and this route was previously protected. However, the planning inspectorate has since allowed houses on part of the route.

The planning inspectorate have also approved houses on part of the western bypass, which extends to the Newport road (see the castle works decision).

What we need is lateral - or, rather, vertical, thinking - just take the route upwards and avoid all the problems.

Housing has only been granted on the Tixall Road section by the Fire Station, the developer has to build the EDR section from Beaconside to St Thomas' Lane. However This is all now outdated as the 'by-pass' now needs to go further East & South East.

Interesting radio discussion with Mr Winnington, he says we don't need a ring road as that would reduce traffic in the town
With this sort of logic you can see how the towns roads have arrived at today's mess. Although the speed camera vans still feel there is opportunity's to catch folks moving, one of there vans parked looking up Newport road bottom of Highfields yesterday. :bravo:

Winnington also seemed to think traffic problems were nothing to do with him, so he should obviously resign immediately.
