That vegan thread.

Lots of info!

Thank you so much!

Lots of work to do tonight but will take them time to read and respond to all!

I don't think it should be too hard (hopefully!) I have a mainly vege and fruit based diet (between 10 - 15 a day) it's just the cheese I mix with vege that's the issue!

Plus I don't have a sweet tooth (I'm all about the crisps)

Nom nom I love talking about food! x

After being a vegetarian for 30 years, who consumed dairy & LOVED cheese, I adopted a Vegan diet 2 months ago. I was worried about some things; B12, cheese, & bizarrely chocolate, and losing weight. I now know a great deal of dark choc' doesn't have milk in it, and even though I'm very slight, and have carried on running and cycling, I have not noticed significant loss in weight, and take a B12 supplement and not noticed significant increase in tiredness. After advice on here I no longer religiously take my tablet, and still don't feel a noticeable increase in tiredness. I drink fortified foods. Vegan cheese is not too good but I haven't tried the Tesco's own yet, which I have heard is the best of a inferior bunch; but my taste buds have definitely changed, and I enjoy natural fruit & foods much more. The restaurant chains are impressively standing up to the challenge, and there are more choices if I want to go out. Its a good time to be a Vegan, and I predict things will improve year on year. Best of luck, I commend this thread and the advice I have accessed due to it!

Well said g2s, very much my story and my words entirely!
The things i thought i would/must miss i don't. Problem here is when you explain that to animal eaters, they find it difficult to comprehend and i totally get it.

There's too much other stuff to try (that doesn't involve the degradation and bits and bobs of our fellow heart beaters), than to stick to what i knew way back when.

It's worth keeping the B12 at the back of your mind. A 'normal' adult can/should have many months supply stored and it could be quite a while (years) before you find yourself out-of-stock due to a slightly reduced input, by which time you may have forgotten about the potential cause of what might be happening then, due to you ingesting slightly less than the almost-bugger-all that you need.

Opinions:
The mexican one was a little dry, and without the side salad the superfood one had ... the plate looked a little sparse.
The superfood one was far tastier, but has mushrooms instead of bread .... making it less a burger in my personal opinion ;-P

The third untried one is tempura fried veggies I believe.
So i've been The Bear Grill and tried two of their vegan burgers; The Mexican and The Vegan Burger.
The Vegan Burger: whilst it looked great, huge and enticing, i felt it a little too sweet for me (the tempura perhaps?) so probs won't go back to that one again. Fries were spot on.
The Mexican: though it doesn't say it's vegan (you know; have the little vegan logo or even the word vegan next to it), it is vegan as a BG waiter told us it be be so. This was my favourite and like @Frontal i felt the presentation a little sparse, saying that i'd happily go back to devour another. Chips were nice too.

I have to go back anyway, the super foody one is still yet to be in my belly!

Yeah, I had to ask the waitress what the third vegan option was, as the mexican wasn't clearly labelled as such.
And echoing your other post, I found it weird that a table ordering vegan burgers be given non-vegan gummy bears with the bill

Oh, in other news, Tesco launched its new Wicked brand this week (already in Stafford's, I've checked)
It's a range of vegan ready meals and pizza's

I was wondering whether to start to include images of the industry, you know the type; what it takes to get cattle to slaughter, what it takes to produce a meat burger; some behind the scenes at farms type stuff etc etc.

I know this played a part in why i turned vegan, i was unaware until i saw the right videos and the right pics and listened to the right video clips, i know of one particular image/video clip that made me switch, so wondered if any of the vegan lot here think the images "help" those nonvegans gain the empathy it takes to go vegan?

I'd include some lovely pics of animals enjoying life though too (doesn't help as much in my eyes, nothing like a bit of suffering to make people see sense), and why we should treat all animals equally, not just the domesticated ones.

To gauge the response (although it's my thread i can do as i please, as long as the powers that be at Stafford Forum allow it obvs), what's peoples thoughts?

a) include them here
b) start a new thread (with a snazzy catchy title) for the appalling unappealing stuff

I've got to the stage where i feel i should do a little more, to the cause, this could help people become vegan and have the vegan power!

How do I edit this?
Anyone got any good lentil recipes?

This makes 4 generous bowls - I usually double it up to give us one main meal & a few days of lunches -

my sketchy memory said:
Lentil Soup:

1 onion, chopped
2 carrots, diced
2 stems of celery, chopped
225g dried red lentils
1 litre of vegetable stock
salt & pepper

In a large pan fry the onion in a teaspoon of oil on a medium heat until translucent, then add the carrot & celery, cover, & sweat for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften.

Add the lentils & stock, bring to the boil & then simmer for 30 minutes until the lentils are cooked, season to taste, and serve.

My favourite Sunday lunch is a Cheese & Lentil Loaf, but it isn't very vegan. In fact it's very un-vegan, but give me a shout if you want the recipe.

Point taken over the Gummy Bears, however lots of our customers choose both our vegetarian and vegan dishes whilst enjoying a flexitarian diet, with hindsight however an alternative to the Gummy Bears might be a better post dinner bill accompaniment - i'm sure our Forumites will have some witty solutions to this predicament. Thanks for the feedback

Well done :)

Milk - I like the blue box Oatly...its the fortified one. Quite palatable in tea and cooking things such as pancakes it's completely indistinguishable from dairy milk. DD likes almond milk, the sweetened one.

Cheese...to be honest I tried all the replacements but decided I could do with out them all.

B12 is important - marmite is the solution!

Good vegan websites give sample menus to cover all the nutrients.

The violife slices were in Asda Sefton park Liverpool so might be on Stafford:/

On phone hard to type but hope that helps.

Thank you!

I picked up some Soya milk ( now wished I had seen this before hand and got out instead....) will open and try on Monday for next weeks brekkie!

Love Marmite so no problem there...

Need to do my research as I have no idea what B12 is!

I thought i was basically eating vegan when i first thought about going f/t, til i started looking at the labels and looking for the vegan logo on packets. They try to put animal stuffs in almost everything!

You other concern about getting the right stuff in your diet, it's all about re-educating yourself and then how seriously are you willing to take it? There's never been such a better time to educate yaself, it's all online, problem is trawling through the guff to get to the good stuff and even then how'dya know you're reading the right things? #minefield

Take it each step at a time and know this isn't something you can do over night, it'll take weeks and months before you know what;s best for you and the changes that are working.

This is my biggest issue - educating myself!

There is so much conflicting information!

I really don't know what a 'balanced diet' looks like??

A glass of the local firewater, like they do (or used to) in Greece.

Very often, recently, we've had a large slice of watermelon between us.

Soya Milk
I don't see the need to pay over 59p for a litre for this, the unsweetened variety! Aldi & Asda sell at that now, and find both an acceptable alternative to stuff pulled out of the breasts of bovine quadrupeds! Fine, imho, for drinks and on cereal; (sometimes doesn't mix in warm drinks! I drink it, tastes the same!)

Yeast Extract, (Marmite).
Is available much cheaper:- Supermarkets own brands in particular. Sainsburies also do a lower salt version, which I occasionally buy, if you are concerned about your sodium chloride intake.

Enjoy your journey, I've enjoyed mine. I may be suffering from illusions but:- I feel brighter, more positive and less fatigued. I wish I could say my running has improved, it hasn't but it doesn't seem to have suffered, despite me not having as much time to train due to my hours at work having increased due to staff illness (As far I know not induced by me. ((Well he would say that wouldn't he! Ed ))
