The Hand and Cleaver, Ranton Green

It’s a real shame that it’s the independent places that seem to be suffering the most and the Hand and Cleaver is at an instant disadvantage because of its location.

What’d it take to make people travel from Stafford out to there then?

Re-open Haughton Station and provide a bicycle hire facility.

Or just move to some empty premises in the county town?.

15 or 16 Martin Street perhaps?......

Two meals for 4.99 and a lift home might do it...

Stafford knows what it wants and its price led, nothing else

Of course that is a generalisation and there are similar folk out in the fields along with discerning earning types in town

Im sure Martin will have a plan if Thatcher's darlings - electricty - water - bt - etc ever get their acts together and bother to re connect the place...

I waited in for a month once and nobody came

Is there an easy cycle route there? Problem is with little 'uns it's best to avoid roads, meaning Derrington and Gnosall are great but not much else.

As for independants suffering most I'm not so sure, I'd say most do well and it's the pub management company ones that fail. Location is a key element here thoug, drink driving is a deciding factor.

I do Doxey - Derrington - Coton Clanford - Ranton, which is the most direct route if its a taxi too

If its from the north end by car then its Creswell, Bridgeford, head for Woodseaves follow the new brown signs

Or from the orient its Haughton, tekka right, left at the cross dressers before you hit the non existent Yew Tree

Good news - the Hand & Cleaver re-opens next Thursday. I spoke to the owner/manager and gathered that they are definitely doing food. Further, from his response to my enquiry about whether they cater for vegetarians: "Yes, we slow-roast them and serve with a coulis", I detect he has a sense of humour. At least, I hope he does.
