What I would like to see in Stafford is.....

I don't think it does which is another travesty. We have a fantastic park with a beautiful band stand and a fabulous band in the Stafford lancers so why isn't more use made of it. Can you just imagine how amazing it would be to arrive in Stafford off the train to hear the wonderful music of a local band. That would be a fabulous welcome to the county town.

I read last night that the guildhall is having a refurbishment later this year. I do hope that the owners of the Guildhall read some of the comments on the forum regarding the market and make some of the improvements suggested.

Lets hope so - 10 stalls isnt really classed as a market - so it could do with a good going over and encouragement to get different styles in there.
If not then turn it to a poundshop - evey time i pass the guildhall one after popping into hmv theres always far too many people in - bit of a health risk thats why i stay away

A really good Italian restaurant would earn my coin.
is vivere any good?
My partner has been a couple of times and is not impressed.
Byway of an update, my partner went again last night (friends choice of venue) and reckons it is now very much improved. Looks like I'll be giving it a go soon.

Although the Guildhall and market are linked internally they're quite separately owned / operated - the Guildhall is owned by a commercial property development company (Glanmore) whereas the market is run by the council so I'd be surprised if it's included in the refurbishment i'm afraid!

Thats a real shame..... the market is in desperate need of a boost in investment and re-think to how it is designed and managed. Im a firm believer that markets have a vital part to play in a thriving town centre as they allow new business to nurture and encourage entrepneurship, and in some cases like Penkridge Market bring in people from outside the town.

On a seperate note, a friend of mine would like a Stafford Rangers top, and as he now lives outside the area he has asked me to get him one. Does anyone know if there is a club shop at the Rangers ground as I have not been there for a number of years.

With regard to Sporting merchandise do you think there is a need/want for a shop in Stafford selling and marketing sportswear for our local teams ie Stafford Rangers, Stafford Town and the Rugby and Cricket clubs?? I would envisage this shop to be a joint venture between all the major sporting teams within Stafford and would not only sell merchandise but advertise when matches are being played and where, and also be a way for the clubs to advertise for more players and fans etc. Just a thought.......

I could be wrong but didn't there used to be a shop in Stafford that did that - I think it was in the building next door to the tattoo shop on Wolverhampton road - maybe called Soccer box?? It's not there now anyway.

soccerbox.com are on the Palmbourne Industrial Park (Castle Street) now - they seem to be more of a general supplier of big name team shirts rather than local.

Do you think a local sport shop like the one i suggested would work?? It would aim to be more than just a shop and would have a real community focus by trying to get more people into sport as well as highlighting the sporting achievements and community programmes that the various teams run. Ideally Stafford Borough and County Council would also have some input and use the shop to also advertise there sporting programmes and venues such as Rowley Park etc.

It would be great if a shop like this could be housed in Stafford place in one of the ground floor units. It would certainly show visitors to the council that BC and CC have a real communtiy interest and are engaged and encourage local sport teams/groups.

I've said it before and will probably say it again, knock down the building that is mcdonald's, and leave an open area so you can see St Mary's and the side of the high house. There are plenty of large empty places Mcdonalds can go, kids are constantly hanging out there but I've noticed the stone work at the high house is becoming damaged, I'd be shocked if this is not related to the amount of youths congregated around with scooters and bikes.

I don't really understand the scooter thing, when I was young if you were hanging around on a scooter any older than six or seven years old the other kids would laugh at you and call you names, it just wasn't cool!
I completely agree, move McDonalds and the ugly bank and get the church on show - there was a lovely Tapas Bar in St Mary's mews called Muse but it closed a few years ago, it was pretty good but a bit hidden away.

I do wish the students wouldnt litter the church yard at lunch time in the summer though.

Today I was walking through North Walls and noticed that North Walls Annexe (Small building oposite Rileys) is boarded up. Why cant this building be brought back into use and used as somewhere where these youths can go to and relax and socialise rather than littering the Church yard as stated by Lisseylee.

Furthermore it would be great if this facilty could somehow work in partnership with the Staffordshire Voluntary Service building oposite to try and get some of the troublesome youths to engage more in the community and start showing some respect and pride in there environment.

Im forever the optimist so maybe Im being too clouded by that, but I genuinely cant understand why/how buildings are boarded up when there is a general need for a building such as that within town..... again i would be interested into hearing your thoughts on this.

I guess its the cost involved with making the buildings safe (health and safety) of maintaining them, paying rates and rent on them and of staffing any schemes that are set up. Its wrong but it is the way it is...

Today for the first time while working through town i sensed a negative vibe. Especially as i walked through the guildhall to see a number of shops having closing down sales. I do hope we can reverse this trend and see an influx of new shops and businesses into the town centre.

Times change - and some business models just cease to work well enough. I can remember when somebody could make a good living working full-time delivering paraffin, but he would be struggling now. HMV's main market seems likely to finally evaporate in front of them soon. The same might well apply to such as W H Smith and Waterstones, though on a longer timescale, maybe. Who could imagine Woolworth's going? But they hardly sold anything worth having - I only really used it as a short cut. It's a matter of seeing where the market is going and spotting when the horse you're flogging is about to expire.

Strange you say that but I thought the opposite when I went up town this lunchtime. It seemed quite busy and it was good to see some new shops open or being done out. Sorted out some hoodie tops( was going to post sorted out some hoodies but that sounds too Death Wish) at the shop in St Mary mews, plenty of school uniform stocked and worth supporting. We had some excellant turkey baps at the bap shop(the old wimpey) very good £2.50 and was quite busy.
It is a worry seeing closing down sales and empty shops but Stafford is faring better than other towns

Depends what your idea of busy is? I find it empty comparered to other places i go - but dare say its busy compared to stone

what id love to see (and if i had loads of money id totally do it - contributions welcome) is some kind of youth centre. if i had endless money to invest i would make it in the town centre, an indoor skate park, food stalls, computer games (for some reason i visualise a pin ball machine??! retro....) sofas to hang out on, cool youth workers with facial hair and caring eyes, and cakes. lots and lots of cakes. whos with me?
also, a burger king would be incredible, and nandos would do well!
btw i think its lovely walking through st marys and seeing people sat around on the grass. its a shame theyre eating mcdonalds, it would be more picturesque if they were eating cupcakes out of woven baskets, but beggars cant be choosers :D
