What's happening to The Island pub?

Me too! Ah, the memories... With the big dog on the roof out back?!
Many a skived lesson spent there.
We probably queued up for the stodge fest, at the same time!

Depending on the new establishment, there may be every chance we get the opportunity again!

oh-my-gord, have you seen the plastic doors they've put in, god only knows what they're doing to the inside now!?

Do the people installing (or those that pay to have new UPVC windows and doors installed) not look at keeping the integrity of a building, UPVC doors can look OK if the right design is chosen but these cowboys have opted for what look like the cheapest option, and in my mind that sort of attitude can only lead to one thing, failure!

Agreed the windowd do not look the best. They needed being set out a bit further for a start and i dont know why they felt the need for a cill ontop of the existing stone ones. UPVC bays can look nice when done properly.

I have it on good authority today that it is going to be an Indian

Some of the lads clearing it out early on admitted as much..

Some chaps were clearing some debris out just now, and were happy to discuss the situation with me (perhaps only because I pointed out that I wasn't basil). It seems that it is intended to be (yet another) Indian restaurant, opening in the late summer. They were kind enough to let me have a quick look round inside and it is looking very 'rustic' after all these years...

Ahh thanks Gramaisc...not been on for a while so missed that post

It will e good to see if it is different from other restaurants...I would love to have more of an tapas style of food. My other half and I often just order a selection of starters in an Indian instead of a main meal and recently went to a place called ping pong which just serve Chinese tapas (dim Sum) It was great.

It has always baffled me as to why we do not have a descent Chinese restaurant in the town centre...I did not enjoy my last visit to the one on the Island and the buffet style does not do it for me

I wish them luck.

I don't know why but Buffet style/all you can eat places always make me feel a bit sad. I never enjoy it as much as I think I should!

Because you find yourself surrounded by an overwhelming atmosphere of greed, one of human's least attractive traits? Because you know the food is made as cheap as humanely possible rather than to taste as good as it can, due to the amount of wastage by earlier noted greedy people? Seeing all the food thrown away, then people going back for another plateful regardless and doing the same?

For me its a simple one, choosing a few chicken wings and finding one had already had a bite taken out and been thrown back. I only really eat the starters anyway, and they are the bits normally handled the most by other customers.

^^ Yeah that's pretty much it. I also think that there is some weird psychological devaluing of the food - because you can have as much of it as you want you don't really appreciate it as much.

Yeah, you are probably right. I much prefer to pay a little more and have a very good meal of a set size myself, I'd choose Narvana over a buffet place any day.

of course it's going to be an Indian, OK mayb e a Chinese, but look at the place, the windows, awful, simply AWFUL!!

So nearly got it right, but then soooo didn't.

The insides will be ripped out, any sort of character that was in place will no doubt have been trashed, if buildings like this aren't in the right hands it's a slippery slope to knocks-downsville.

The next talking point is the signage, god save us all!?

...but we'll see.

Surely these old pubs should be listed...does anyone know how old the pub is, Gothic Cottage on the end of that row cannot not even have new glass put in let alone different style windows...how come pubs do not seem to have the same restrictions?

This is the White Lion.

It was where the traffic lights are now, past the Gothic Cottage, you can see the old lock-up on the right. One of the finest buildings in Stafford, it was not important enough to save, although a pretence of cataloguing the parts for re-assembly was undertaken...

I vaguely remember hearing of that, didn't they catalogue everything then just bin it?

Its destination seems to be unresolved. I suspect that it was sold as 'architectural salvage' - and for a tidy sum, too.

A survey of posh houses in Cheshire might turn up a few bits....

Yes. It was the King William originally, then the Dirty Duck and then the Malt & Hops..

The White Lion was 'dismantled' in 1975/6, when the Queensway was built.

Do you know the year it was built or do you think it was used for something else before becoming a pub?

The Lion, or the Slops? The White Lion was ancient, and included materials from the medieval Hospital of St John, that had been on the site. The lock-up was moved and re-built a few feet away from its original site, I believe.

You can see the King Bill windows in the background of this 1954 picture.
