I haven't looked into the figures but the World Cup probably wouldn't have incurred quite as high costs as the Olympics as most of the stadiums (stadia?) are already built - Old Trafford, Anfield, St. James etc - with only upgrades needed.
The Eye had a 'number crunching' that suggested a £400 million profit for SA staging the last one - and a £700 million profit for FIFA - though i don't know how reliable the figures are.
