Siphoning petrol.
Back in the 70's I remember my dad quite often siphoning my petrol out of my car with tubing .Sucking it up and spitting it out when he got a mouthful as it started coming out the end of the tube , when my brother had lent his car and ran it dry.

@staffordjas, I think you bought a jump starter to keep in your car in case of emergencies last year. Just a reminder, with winter approaching, that they need charging up every six months, even if you've not used it, in order to maintain maximum performance.
So glad you remembered me getting it during the first lockdown @proactive and mentioned re-charging it. Just plugged it in and it's only just over half charged. Cheers for that

New Tesla just arrived at work, been for a spin. Brutal, just brutal.
A neck snapping licence shredder.
Can't say I really miss mine. So many niggles and problems (put right without fuss by Tesla, but still). The highlight was pulling out of a junction in evening rush hour one December and everything just died. My how I was popular with other motorists that night.

If it's a Model 3 then I'm sure it will be fine, if it's an S or an X, then best of British...

He may not look 'the type', but the chap playing the accordion here has a strong penchant for cars with a bit of poke.

He currently runs some sort of Jag.

He had a test drive of a Tesla a couple of years ago and his concise assessment of its performance characteristics were - "It would scare the living shite out of you".

I'd have one, but no where I can charge it up at home safely. :?
If you have a driveway then you can have a home charger installed and top up each night. If you don't have one then there's the 50kw Instavolt chargers at the Hough that you can use when you need to fill up.

The Hough isnt that far away from where I live either.

I am tempted the the self charging hybrids. I did request the BMW 330e as a company car for work but non are available until at least the summer of 2022.

No such thing as a self charging hybrid. It gets charged by fossil fuel.

ā€œSelf-charging hybridā€ is a euphemism for ā€œsnake oilā€

It just means it has a teeny tiny battery that will harvest your engine braking. Itā€™s a worthless quota-filling thing, and not worth considering.

I test drove a Model S P100D a few years back - top spec type thing, all wheel drive, etc

I let the sales guy put his foot down for me but I didnā€™t have the nerve to do so in a Ā£100k missile. And that wasnā€™t even full-tilt as it wasnā€™t even in Sport mode let alone Ludicrous.

Iā€™m getting an M3LR, 4s 0-60 is plenty for meā€¦

They all get charged from fossil fuels, whether they are Self-Charging, PHEV or BEV.
PHEV or BEV may get some of theirs from non-fossil generation - nuclear, wind, solar, biomass, hydro, etc, the proportion being dependant upon where they are charged.

I wonder how the efficiency compares between 'self-charging' and charging via the grid? Large-scale generators should be more efficient than small 'personal' ones, but there will then be distribution losses - maybe they about even out?

Indeed. Though mainly it's gas and nuke at this time of year and maybe a bit of coal.

Still there are many utility companies out there that claim if you get your electricity with them it's 100% green energy. They are able to take the general public for fools because so many of them are.

GB currently running at 4% wind, 2% hydro and 7% biomass, ( = ~ 13%? ) though how much fossil fuel is burnt to run biomass stations is anybody's guess...

Ireland is running at 32% 'renewable' over the last 24 hours, mostly wind, and all the interconnectors are exporting, so there isn't even proxy nuclear at the moment

True but it does seem like the car companies are forgetting to mention that the electric part is being charged by the fossil fuel engine in the car. Iā€™m positive some people will think that it just magically stays charged.

The advertising is very slick and does give you the impression that you're getting some kind perpetual motion, and the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics are just some bollocks being forced on us by faceless bureaucrats.

That is exactly what some people think, thereā€™s a write up somewhere from someone who had a cab driver make a comment about their EV taxi and ā€œcanā€™t wait to get one of those self-charging hybrids so I donā€™t need to plug it inā€
