Today's Big Picture on BBC News website.
I used to live a couple of hundred yards upstream, on this bank - you can have a cup of tea in my bedroom now...
A mate of mine was fishing just downstream from here once and I stopped to chat to him as I cycled past. Unfortunately, he didn't notice my arrival and I put my foot into a water-vole burrow, taking both of us and the bike into the river. He was remarkably unamused.
I lived in the ground floor that is now the Windrush Garden Café https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place...0x4871259c974efdd3:0x62b46d705469ad33!6m1!1e1 - there may be a plaque...That's where we're going this week-end.
I once made a flippant comment to a friend who had been called to jury service, that the jury members would lose more in terms of lost income and time than the guilty defendants in the cases put before them would be sentenced to, in terms of fines and detention/community service orders/etc.Sat in cannock court waiting for someone to plead guilty so I can go home.
I had to jury service about 12years ago, hopefully I'll never have to do it again!I once made a flippant comment to a friend who had been called to jury service, that the jury members would lose more in terms of lost income and time than the guilty defendants in the cases put before them would be sentenced to, in terms of fines and detention/community service orders/etc.
A brief, back-of-an-envelope calculation showed that this was likely to be true in his case...
Hope all goes well Peggy.I'm watching the sunrise over London having arrived at hospital late last night. Start a new treatment which involves a line being placed in my jugular first thing in the morning. I'm hoping the sun rises slowly!
I couldn't believe it when they came around with tea and coffee in our locked Jury room , but we had to pay for it if we wanted any. Wouldn't let me leave the room to get my purse out of my locker, so had to lend money off someone or would have had to go without. Same with the sandwiches which we were brought in. No money, no sandwich! Would have gone hungry and thirsty as we were in there all day until an unanimous verdict was reached. One woman stuck it out until the final minute before we were due to be carted off to a hotel overnight, to change her mind and agree with the rest of us (her sister was childminding, so she stretched it out as long as possible to get as much money out of them as she could )I once made a flippant comment to a friend who had been called to jury service, that the jury members would lose more in terms of lost income and time than the guilty defendants in the cases put before them would be sentenced to, in terms of fines and detention/community service orders/etc.

This is the last one I got, about 3 hours ago - subsequent events aren't always quite as apocalyptic as predicted - though "yellow rain" is to be avoided on your washing..Thanks, hadn't heard the forecast .
