Sounds like you could do with blocking some ports to their machines to prevent them from running uTorrent locally and therefore preventing your connection from becoming throttled.

I've tried sharing broadband connections before and it's a no go to me. It's bad enough when my wife's trying to use bingo and i'm running windows update on 3 machines at once which i'm re-installing. She complains like mad, so I just sit there slaggin VM off with her rather than admit I'm causing the problem ;)

Problem is, you can use any port for uTorrent! I'm building a new server soon, and thanks to a few hardware donations from MyCult I may have a second line just for downloads :D

I was thinking of doing this, however VM won't install two connections in the same house let alone for the same person. Apart from the fact we have two accounts in our house already but they don't believe me!

I was thinking, that co-ax cable will feed TV and internet? And you get a splitter in the box? And if you just have TV, no splitter is used and the single cable goes to the TV. If you just have BB, it goes to that. Therefore, they both work on the same connections. If you put a splitter in place, and put 2 modems on, will you get 2 lines? You can get 50Mb BB and TV at the same time, so 2x20Mb connections could work.

Now if only I had a few spare modems...... :D

The cable into your house is capable of running a few modems at 50 meg as far as i'm aware. The problem is that your line into your house doesn't providea dedicated account, it's the mac address of the modem that does this. Therefore unless you know how to clone a modem or buy a pre cloned one your buggered! Any old modems you dig out would still be assigned to their old (and most probably) disconnected accounts.

There was someone on stoke gumtree selling cloned modems for £50 (i think) which apparently gave you free 50Meg broadband guaranteed for 12 months - I don't know whether these things really work or not or whether he even still advertises on there.

Also, I completely forgot that port numbers can be changed for torrenting - my appols!

If someone disconnects their modem before the account expires, and you don't use it for a few months, they tend to carry on working afterwards. Used one for several months last year when Virgin cut me off for paying my bill, as they refused to reconnect me.

I used to know a few students who moved in together after uni. All took their respective modems with them, and they never paid a bill for BB at the new house - just connected a new one each time they got cut off.

Installing a moat - with a floating hen-house? Just blank it all out on the receipt when you claim the expenses and all will be well.

You're so witty at putting together the facts from current affairs along with facts you know about individuals. That should have gone in the joke thread!! skill point awarded :)

Hmm, really not sure what to make of this.

Swedish software firm buys The Pirate Bay for £4.7m
Global Gaming Factory X buys file-sharing site The Pirate Bay, promising that copyright holders will get paid
Can't get onto TPB from here, anyone able to shed some light?

TPB might change owner

Yes, it's true.

News reached the press today in Sweden - The Pirate Bay might get aquired by Global Gaming Factory X AB.

A lot of people are worried. We're not and you shouldn't be either!

TPB is being sold for a great bit underneath it's value if the money would be the interesting part. It's not. The interesting thing is that the right people with the right attitude and possibilities keep running the site.
As all of you know, there's not been much news on the site for the past two-three years. It's the same site essentially. On the internets, stuff dies if it doesn't evolve. We don't want that to happen.

We've been working on this project for many years. It's time to invite more people into the project, in a way that is secure and safe for everybody. We need that, or the site will die. And letting TPB die is the last thing that is allowed to happen!

If the new owners will screw around with the site, nobody will keep using it. That's the biggest insurance one can have that the site will be run in the way that we all want to. And - you can now not only share files but shares with people. Everybody can indeed be the owner of The Pirate Bay now. That's awesome and will take the heat of us.

The old crew is still around in different ways. We will also not stop being active in the politics of the internets - quite the opposite. Now we're fueling up for going into the next gear. TPB will have economical muscles to let people evolve it. It will team up with great technicians to evolve the protocols. And we, the people interested in more than just technology, will have the time to focus on that. It's win-win-win.

The profits from the sale will go into a foundation that is going to help with projects about freedom of speech, freedom of information and the openess of the nets. I hope everybody will help out in that and realize that this is the best option for all. Don't worry - be happy![

the new owners reckon they are going to pay people to share files :?:

Mr Pandeya said that one of the biggest hurdles in overcoming illegal file-sharing was that there was zero cost to the users, while legitimate sites required users to pay for content. The only way to make something more attractive than free was to pay users to share files.
good luck with that lol

yeah, i saw this on b3ta yesterday - it's not really true though, is it? i mean, if anything, the only films that are generating money from cinema sales are blockbusters.. you only have to look at transformers, dark knight, et al taking over £200m in their opening weekend to see that.. whereas films that don't rely on loud bangs and special effects are less well suited to a cinema environment, imo..

the only time i ever go to the cinema is to see blockbusters, because i know the effect will be lost at home.. but for films that actually have a decent plot, characters you invest in, etc. i would much rather pirate them and watch them in the comfort of my own home with a few glasses of wine, than have to suffer the horrors of going to the cinema (sticky seats, overpriced food, kids, etc.)..
