Had an interesting conversation with the owner of the Armenian restaurant we had lunch in this afternoon regarding Ukraine.

Whilst he acknowledged the atrocities that are happening he said NATO were to blame for rubbing Putin up the wrong way by trying to force Ukraine to join and also that Armenia would be better off back under mother Russia. Apparently I should listen to both sides of the story but he couldn't answer when I asked why it was necessary to kill people if it was such a wonderful regime.

Strange world we live in.
Weird that he didn't feel Ukrainians should get a choice in the matter.

Really is a lot of pro Russian chat going on, but nobody seems able to answer basic questions when pushed. I've also not done extensive research but am willing to bet a Venn diagram of brexit supporters and putin excusers would be vaguely round.

Like everything there are 2 sides and we are brainwashed in a very pro US/Western world perspective. I have a Russian friend who married a Ukrainian. They talk about politics in a way I'd never even considered given my Western bias. Very informative. Its very hard to get the other side perspective in this country as its always gone through our western filters

My wife grew up in the USSR, it's telling that her and her friends I've met all to a person hate Russia and they aren't from the same country. General feeling is Ukraine is the start, because they aren't nato, but he wont stop til he has the 'old' lands back no matter what the inhabitants want nor what means are required.

Eastern Ukraine has been part of Russia and then the Soviet Union for hundreds of years. The population are Russian speakers and in many cases ethnic Russians. Its all very messy :(. Whose land one thinks its should be depends on where you come from usually

Why not ask the Ukrainians what they want, rather than kill them? I'm not a fan of the Ukraine as such, there are plenty of problems there, but they didn't invade Russia.

Using history as reasoning for invasion raises serious questions, the most pressing to me being what is the cut off date? How long must a country be independent before their old masters are not justified to invade? Are Latvia and Lithuania legitimate targets too?

I don't have the answers sadly, just posing some thoughts that might help explain why some think the war is justified. Not defending this line of thought, it's the other side of the two sides thing.

Anyone know of anything local helping refugees? Thinking maybe the Polish club? My wife speaks fluent Russian, which obviously isn't Ukrainian but between that and Polish there's enough to get by we suspect.

They have sent some vans of 'stuff' to Poland, arrived just now, so it could well be worth being in contact with them, they should know what is going on, in general, at least.

It's a shame that no one on here has really taken any interest in this....

Incenentally @tek-monkey , I hope your wife is doing well and not having any problems with being a fluent Russian speaker.... About a month before this all happened a group of young males were in 'my shop', I'm the only one whose bothered to download a translater onto my phone, so I was the only one to help them look for what I thought was 'fish'... They told me they were Russian (their English was bad, my Russian is worse) but it turned out to be some kind of big knives.... Anyhow, I hope they're OK, they're here in this country working, not in Russia....

She's not that sociable so doesn't particularly get problems being out, or rather no more than because she's an Eastern European. Getting with her did really open my eyes to the racism in this country, we are treated very differently when people hear her speak.

English is her 3rd fluent language, after Latvian and Russian. In that part of the world they tend to use Russian as their default second language in the same way English is in the west, think she said in most ex USSR countries you'll get between a quarter and a third will be able to speak it alongside their native tongue. Her best friend is Lithuanian and they communicate in Russian as neither know each others native tongue.

No idea how Latvia compares to Ukraine but there are so many signs still here that the USSR existed by force not choice, it was an occupation. Massive support here for Ukraine, flags everywhere, no love for Russia.

There is a walled compound outside the apartment I'm sat in, now used for parking, that was one of many the Russian army used to keep the locals in check. Been told a few things that make me realise why they're hated so much here, apparently a feeling throughout the occupied lands.

The stories I've heard from the current Mrs p and her family and friends make you understand the hatred there is towards Russia in Hungary as well.

It's weird, I sort of knew, but in a back of your mind didn't happen to us so whatever kind of way. Suddenly makes sense why they won't let immigrants keep their identities if they want to live here, they have to adopt Latvian names. It was because of all the Russians they felt were still too present.

My husband, the carer is younger than me, we went to schools in different counties, he knows absolutely nothing about the Cold War or any other European 'troubles' (or even about the IRA)... I was fortunate at school to have an amazing European studies teacher who taught us all sorts. I've met lots of people my own age too who aren't really interested even though it happened in our time, it didn't happen to them.

I'm surprised about the ira, but having the raf base literally in my back garden I guess made us more aware as you'd see increased armed presence every time something kicked off.
