Stafford Western Access Route.

It always 'amazes' me how when the traffic lights pack up at the Lichfield Road/Riverway junction (which is reasonably often), traffic manages to flow so much better than when the lights work. Who'd have thought...
Lotus lights are the classic example of that effect.

'Failure' is a massive improvement, until some weirdo turns them back on.

I've just had a new experience with the new road. Coming down the Doxey Road section (towards town), I approached the Doxey Road/Pans Road/Sainsbury's roundabout. The car in front of me took the town centre lane and turned right, to go the wrong way round the roundabout.

Traffic lights or roundabouts, it doesn't make much difference in Stafford.

Had a look at the junction today and to be fair the road marking just there does indicate that this lane is to turn right (going around the roundabout first mind) so I guess they never saw that big round thing ?
Will see these drivers on occasion who only look just beyond the bonnet & often looking through the gap between the steering wheel and top of the dash.

Which is why many places have part-time signals. But I guess in Stafford they don't want to have to visit the traffic lights to wind up the clock inside :D

Painting a fence on Weeping Cross, not that many years ago, I was amazed to see that the flashing orange lights in the area around Walton were manually turned on and off* by a bloke driving round in a car and shoving a key into them.

* Not always off...

That's how they're done. Completely manual. It's less of a key and more of a long rod that must press a switch inside. It's usually the lollipop people that do it when they are on duty.

It's raving mad - this is the 21st century. The additional traffic chaos from the car stopped on the main road during the peak of the school run was not helping.

Where I am, the solar powered "school lamps" have an inbuilt timer, and nobody seems to have been near them in ten years.

What is more crazy is how replacements are funded sometimes. I worked in Burton-on-Trent for about 6 months and on one road the signs said something like "PFI funded lamppost renewal". So rather than just do the work, they get a contractor to manage the project and fund it, then the council is paying it off for years like a mortgage, complete with interest.

Didn't we used to have part time lights around Queensway to the Island in the 80s?

I vaguely remember them and think they were switched on and off automatically at set times of the day.

Howdy folks. Sean Geraghty, the Senior Engineer has replied to me; in response to me sending him a link to the forum page:

Thank you for the email regarding the operation of the new traffic lights junction at A34 / Greyfriars / Madford Retail Park and Pans Road.

I will review a sample of comments being made on this matter and get back to you in due course.
A month on, have you had any response?

Why oh why are the planners in Stafford so frigging stupid? I walked along the path that goes from the lines along the river, under the new road, behind Lidl and on to Sainsburys today and was deeply frustrated that a small set of steps was not included to allow pedestrians to walk from the Riverside path up to the pavement on the new road. Seriously how much extra effort would that have been for the planners and construction? Morons the lot of them.

Done for cheapness just like the A500 in Stoke where they didn't add underpasses to save money, then had to redo it all much later on anyway.

Or maybe "a small set of steps" might later be identified as an obstacle to accessibility for those with a disability contrary to the Equality Act 2010.
