That's because the fact is that minimum wage workers are in fact better off, even if it is only by a few pounds, as I have already said. Can you provide an example of a situation where someone would not be better off working?

LS, how much JSA/HB do you get? I'm sure the average person will easily clear £100 between the 2. Then you have no council tax to pay, no prescription charges etc. Its gotta be close to a NMW worker doing a full time job. Not everyone gets a full time job though, someone working 20 hours a week would be much worse off than you.

I'd like to know how much you can get if you work 16 hours while still Being allowed to claiming benefits. I feel we need a graph.

Errrr yeah.... between £5.80 and £5.99 per hour if working 37.5 hours or less...see above.

Bear in mind that currently it's 5.73 and it goes up in October to 5.80. I presume benefits will also increase to reflect the fact.

Not to mention all the free time you have when you're not working, less travelling to do, no stresses of working, no having to be up at the crack of dawn each day in order to be ready for work.... you're a lot better off on benefits up to that point.

The fact of the matter is you should be significantly worse off on benefits as an incentive.

You can't claim JSA once you work 16 hours per week or more.

Currently:
JSA = £50.95
Council Tax Benefit = £13.39
Housing Benefit = £55.83
Total = £120.17

16 hours:
16 x £5.73 = £91.68 (not liable for NI or Income Tax)
Council Tax Benefit = £6.24
Housing Benefit = £30.68
Total = £128.60

Difference = £8.43 per week in favour of working - and I would still be taking £36.92 without giving anything back, except possibly profits to some corporation.

See here for information about NHS costs. It is highly likely that I still wouldn't have to pay.

going back to my earlier post could you not earn 91.68 working 16 hours and still claim the job seekers allowance and other benefits? Or would you have to work 15.99 hours?

Also is there a wage cap in that 15.99 hours? Or could someone in theory earn as much as they could.

So working 16 hours a week gets you £8? There really is no incentive to get the arse scratchers moving is there?

Benefits used to be capped, my mum was allowed to earn a tenner a week and anything else came off her benefits. Think nowadays they let you do as you please don't they?

As far as I know, the amount of JSA you get is reduced based on your income - but I don't make the rules, the DWP do.

Which bit? Seems stupid to take money off you for working, as it gives you less incentive to work. Much better to let you earn as much as you can in those hours, but give you a very basic JSA.

So does this mean you would have to cover the rest of the council tax then? Because thats a pretty hefty sum to come out of your monthly £514.40.

Ok so what do you ACTUALLY have to do these days to get your money? How many jobs do they MAKE you apply for? How many interviews do you HAVE to attend? Do they check with people who interviewed you that you didn't act like a twat just to avoid getting the job?
