New stores in the guildhall

How do I edit this?
The Stafford store was only ever a temporary store, however, that article suggests they still have to get the go ahead from their American parent company before store closures, but I thought that part of the business was already defunct and the uk arm was trading in its own right ? , I can see the whole lot vanishing within the next few years tbh :(

If it works the same way as a multinational I used to work for, then the parent company will have been separated off from the American retail arm & will work as a licensing operation, charging the retail companies across the world a percentage of their turnover to use the ToysRUs branding. By setting up multiple limited companies you section off the risks and it means if, say for the sake of argument your US retailers suffered horrific losses, then when your creditors force insolvency they can't get their hands on your UK stores or stop you using the brand elsewhere.

It also means (& i really have no idea if this applies to ToysRUs) that, should you be inclined to, you can base your parent company somewhere where the tax regime is particularly favourable & set your licensing fees at a level that closely matches your bottom line, thus avoiding the taxes that would be due on your profits if you declared them in your major markets...

So our fascist dictatorship, sorry, government, forces the demise of a major company it had the power to save and throws thousands of people on the dole just before Christmas.

What a load of old bollocks, how does Toys R Us closing make anyone a fascist?

And how has the government forced the demise of the organisation?

The thousands of jobs are circa 3,000 and I'm sure the government can spend £9million on far better ventures to save or create jobs in this country.

Plus no one is losing their jobs before Christmas.....

The Pensions Protection fund is a government organisation. If it was properly funded by the Tory government they would have enough money to bail out the pensions. It is only them that are forcing the administration, other creditors are supporting it.

3000 is, exactly as I said, ‘thousands’, ie more than one thousand. Clearly you are happy that 3000 people will be forced into unemployment, which will have to be paid for by the state.

if they go into administration it will be before Christmas. If they do not lose their job before Christmas they will have impending unemployment hanging over them over the holiday period.

Oh yeh that makes them fascists doesn't it? Silly me.

I didn't say 3000 wasn't thousands, I said I'm sure the government could better spend £9 million to save or create new jobs.

Really?

As much as I dislike Hopes Dad he has a point - sort of. Whenever Retail jobs are lost the government shrugs it's shoulders and couldn't really care less. It happened with Woolworths and even with BHS the government were only concerned with the pensions of it's core voters, it didn't give a toss for the actual workers. If 3,000 plus jobs were going in almost any other industry the MPs would be tabling questions, demanding rescue and calling special committees. Retail? - lets just close our eyes and move on.

How to be a capitalist.

  1. Buy a company but don’t use your own money. Use debt to buy most of the company then transfer all that debt back into the company.
  2. Make sure you charge the company for your fantastic advice.
  3. Its useful if the company mainly rents it’s shops from a business your involved in.
  4. ‘Loan’ money to subsidiaries in tax havens then write off the loan.
  5. When it’s all about to go tits up make sure you don’t pay your creditors.
  6. When it goes tits up go to step 1 and repeat.
Toys R Us

  1. Toys R Us pay $400M a year to service the debt incurred in buying itself.
  2. $183M charged in advisory fees by its owners since 2005.
  3. The majority of Toys R Us shops are owned by the retailer’s related holding property company to whom they pay rent.
  4. £548.5million loan to a subsidiary based in the British Virgin Islands written off.
  5. £14.5m owed by Toys R Us in UK tax alone.
And yet some people think we should give them more of our money?

Wow......there is a difference between retail and skilled jobs.

Many retail employees can be younger staff, part time staff who do not contribute to the pension pot.

It should also be noted that job losses incurred in retail are very very unlikely to have a major burden on the local economy with regards to numbers of job losses being widespread, plus retail employees are likely to find it easier to get back into work.

Take the flip where they say 500 jobs could be lost at GE locally, then MPs should get their knickers in a twist. The impact locally can be devastating and much harder to mitigate those losses. Nobody wants job losses, but some are more concerning than others.
