Pot holes in roads

If councils maintained the roads properly instead of patching during the winter and the annual throwing of stones, held together with a micron's width of tar during the summer than potholes would be far less likely to happen. They might even find that spending that little bit extra to begin with saved them more money in the long term.
This is called surface dressing, it is a form of preventative maintenance. It prevents potholes by sealing the surface of the road (stopping the ingress of water with the micron's width of tar) and improving the friction of the road surface (with the throwing of stones) and extends the life of a road by between 6-12 years if applied properly and appropriately. It is far cheaper than resurfacing an entire carriageway every 10-15 years, which is what you would have to do if your definition of 'properly' was applied.

I've taken a few trips to the tip in the last few weeks, else my driveway would look like a landfil! The recycling facility is still there and handily open at weekends so if you do have a car/van then disposing of your rubbish shouldn't be too tricky.
Wish my neighbours had figured that one out, they've left all their rubbish at the kerb (some not even in bags) for somewhere between 2 to 4 weeks (feels really long but couldn't say for certain). As you can imagine, it's EVERYWHERE! Plus the school kids kicked it around so our drive was covered in it too. Sigh. Weekly collections of everything at Christmas please!!

sorry, /off topic

Take the uncollected rubbish and ram it into the nearest available pot-hole. Two problems gone. Simple.

Micro-landfill - the way forward.

The state of the Queensway roundabout on the bend adjacent to the Specialized store is horrendous - massive crumbling potholes.

A new nasty one just after the BMW garage on Radford bank heading over the bridge. :grr:

I hope the ass gets sued off the council. This roundabout has been a disgrace for the last 3 winters if not more.

Does anyone know which decade the Queensway roundabout by Specialised is due to be resurfaced, or how the council get away with leaving it in this terrible condition?

Imagine it on two wheels on a rainy night and without local knowledge of the trap locations.....

I reported these holes (all over that roundabout to be fair) to the council in May, again in October and still nothing has been done.

The problem is people don't report holes to the council so they can say "oooh look, we have met our target of filling holes".....

See my link below to report them....

BTW anyone who has visited the next / new look / matalan retail park in the last year, what about the huge holes coming out of the place just before the roundabout.,,, more holes than road I would guess....

You don't need to use fixmystreet, you can report potholes directly to the council here: https://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/transport/staffshighways/contact/Contact.aspx

I'm pretty sure the godawful road by the retail park is private.

Lammascote is in a bloody terrible state but I can imagine that nobody wants to take responsibility for the 'traffic chaos' headlines when they start working on that at the same time as Beaconside, Redhill, Riverside and Northwalls.

True... but...

Councils are liable for pothole damages if it can be proven they knew the pothole was there and did nothing about it within a certain amount of time (I think 10 working days but could be wrong).

If you report it direct on the SCC site then there is no public record of the complaint having been made. Report it on FMS and the record is there for anyone who cares to look in case the council do bugger all and some poor sod is left with a big bill as a result.

Ditto this.... info in the public domain is much more useful in such instances.

.... big, lumpy patches. There was a beauty outside the Sandonia in 2008. It had "TEMP" spray-written on it and, during the seven or eight months that it was there, somebody came back twice to renew the "TEMP" as the traffic had worn it off. I was going to spray "PERM?" on it and see if anybody noticed. But I never got round to it. Shame.

The pothole just before the mini islands going up Radford Bank was being filled in this morning.
